I wanting to start mounting different ducks so I have a few questions.

What is a good price range I can expect to spend on a decent mount? Does this differ between types of ducks and the positions they are mounted in?

Also, what is the best way to store a duck if I can't get it to the taxadermist right away and how long can it be stored?

Best thing to do is put them in a pair of pantyhose with their head turned back and make sure all of the feathers are laid down smooth and you should be able to keep them frozen that way until you are ready to mount. Prices should be between $100 and $200 depending on the mount. This is how I do it but im sure you will get many different answers on here.

I'd say about $250 for a normal mount on a piece of drift wood, but if you want to add more habitat it can go higher.

As for preparation, my neighbor is a taxidermist and recommends that you gently fold the head down to the belly and place it in a thick plastic bag. Force as much air out of the bag as possible and seal it up with a zip tie. Then, just put it in the freezer and you should be good to go for a long time (several months). Try to get your duck to the taxidermist soon though- they're the experts on storage and keep in mind they might require deposits that range anywhere from 10% to 50% the cost of the mount. Ask your taxidermist if they will accept monthly payments and it usually works out great- by the time you're done paying the animal is completed.

In my experience, complete opposite...

Most taxidermist will tell you not to put it in pantyhose. Don't vacuum seal it either.

Double bag it in Freezer bags. and they last for a couple years before getting mounted. You can wrap the feet in something to keep from freezer burn, but I am not 100% on what that is.

Expect to spend $225+ for a quality mount. There are lots of folks who do birds for less, but their work isn't "quality" in my opinion. Look at folks' birds before sending your trophy to them. If you like there work, and they are "cheaper" that is your call.

Also, if you have a service/expertise you can offer, try offering barter deals. I've had good luck dropping my bill by going this route.

I just sent my duck off to Jason @ texantaxidermy.net - wrapped in newspaper and double bagged then frozen.

I was quoted "summertime 2015" by my taxidermist over the weekend... Depends on how busy they get.

Newspaper ink will come off on the feathers and does not come off.

Double bag on ziplocks.

Pantyhose can break and fray the tips of feathers.
