Wanting to get a 300 whisper or 300 blackout barrel for my encore. I don't see any diffrence in the two except, the blackout seems more popular so ammo may be easier to find. What preference do the experts here have?

If you get a barrel chambered in 300 whisper, it can not fire the 300 blk out, since the blk out is a longer round. But a 300 blk out can fire either.

So there basically the same other than that? I should just go with the blackout then, right?

The Smith & Wesson M&P15 300 Whisper is the only 300 Whisper I have seen that is advertised to shoot 300 Blackout.

So if you wanted to get a close range deer rifle for the kids would you get a whisper or the blackout?

If a S&W 300 whisper can chamber the 300 Blackout, why can't other rifles do the same? Not trying to hijack post, but I'm confused. confused2

300 whisper is a wildcat round invented/patented by J.D. jones of SSK Industries, AAC just tweaked it enough to meet SAMMI specs and "invented" the Blackout. For a barrel to say 300 Whisper they must have SSK authorization, atleast that it what I am led to believe. That's a shortened version of a long story that I'm also sure I'll be corrected on.

Side note my buddy has the 338 whisper, fires a 300gr 338 Sierra HPBT quieter than a pellet gun, it's awesome.

That's what the specs say on the S&W website.

Get the Blackout, it will shoot either of them.
I have a 16" and an 8" SBR, both in 300 blackout. I shoot blackout ammo and Hornady Whisper ammo out of both.

The Whisper was made from a .221 case, and blackout is from a 5.56 case. Different throat sizes, specs are close, but use different reamers. Apparently the shorter, tighter throat in the Blackout case increases pressure when shot in a Whisper chamber and could exceed SAAMI max pressures. I'm no pro and that info is just a choke and puke from when I was looking up stuff before buying my blackout.

It has to do with the overall length and SAAMI spec. The blk out chamber has a longer throat than the Whisper. So, the blk out bullets are seated out longer for increased powder capacity. This increased powder capacity allows increased pressure and proper cycling in an AR platform, which it was designed for. The 300 Whisper does not have a SAAMI spec, which means that it is "technically" a wildcat still, with varying case dimensions and chamberings. The 300 blk out has a SAAMI spec, meaning exact case drawings and chambering size on file. If you set a fired case of each next to each other, you can not tell them apart. They have the same case dimensions. But it's the overall length of the bullet that is the difference.

Yes. If you increase the throat by .015", you have a blk out. Hornady has done 2 things. They want to sell their 300 Whisper ammo, so they chamber it in Whisper/blk out. If they increase the throat by .015", it can do both. Kill 2 birds with one stone.
