I've got a new marlin cowboy 4570 lever action. I'm planning on taking it hunting this year. I've just finally finished sighting it in with the factory iron sights.

I've got some 300grn about 1850fps muzzle federal loads. some325grn hornady leverevolution at about 2000fps and some Remington 405 at about 1300fps.

gun shoots great. I got it sighted in about 1-2in high of bull with good shot groupings out of the first two loadings. I was actually hoping to hunt with the Remington loads. I'd heard a lot about them being good/reliable hunting loads. I only had one box of them though. so I sighted the gun with the others and then figured I'd only need minimal sight adjustment once I switched into the remingtons....WRONG

I was shooting at 50yds....the remingtons were practically hitting the ground before they got there. not even on paper...were in the bottom of the board almost 2ft lower than the other loads. I didn't even have enough elevation adjustment left to get them on target.

is this right? needless to say i'll be hunting with the federal loads for this year. I'd like to switch to a more cowboy styled bullet though. not sure what sort of load to shoot.

anyone have any recommendations? or a similar experience?

I ran a Guide Gun for a year and did a lot of handload work..

Your findings do not suprise me..
Though I wasn't running open sights

Amazing the difference in the feel of the various loads isn't it?

Sounds like the Remingtons are loaded to Cowboy Action Shooting Levels. That is an 80 grain heavier bullet that is leaving the barrel at 65% of the speed. I would say that your results are typical.

Assuming that they are fairly accurate, the Hornady load would be my choice for hunting. Not saying that the Remingtons won't get it done... but the Hornadys will probably do it better.

The Rem's are factory loads, safe for the old trapdoor Springfields, the others are loaded to modern rifle pressures. All will do a great job but you have to pick one for POI and stick with it unless you want to be sighting in a lot for different loads.

yeah....I figured point of impact would be different. just surprised me that it was THAT different. that I'm aware of...the ramp on the front beavr-tail is the only elevation adjustment on the gun...and I don't think the gun had enough ramp to get those Remington loads on target at 50yds I think I would have maxed out my upward adjustment and still been very low.

YES!....the remingtons were pleasant to shoot. no recoil, not much muzzle blast. the federals are reasonably stiffer....and those lever-revolution will pommel you after a few rounds of that. I mean it was definitely shootable...I'm not recoil shy. I'm accustomed to a .270 though and this was way more than that. the 4570 with those lever revolution I would say was comparable in recoil to my brothers 300 weatherby with factory weatherby loads.

If your gonna' try sticking with "Cowboy" type loads or the Remmy Green Box in that .45-70 you'd be better off with a .30-30. I love the .45-70, but practical it is not.

I only use the Leverevolution in my Guide Gun. Using heavy loads in that short barrel is almost like throwing rocks, they drop so fast. Plus, my guide gun mustve been made to shoot those Hornadies. They are super accurate and perform amazingly well.

That's exactly what you should expect. You have about 25% more bullet weight travelling at half the speed...

Cant beat the Hornady.
I had the same experience you did with the Cowboy loads. I think I tried Buffalo Brand??? from Cabelas. The best thing I can say is I was able to hit paper at 25 yards and ended up with 40 empty brass.

This one
was shot with Leverevolution in a Winchester 1885 @ about 140 / 150 yards.
Broke both front shoulders and stopped just under the skin on the exit side.
Didn't kill it, but it dropped right there and couldn't move.
With that same gun and load, I shot a Black Hawaiian sheep semi quartering away. The entry hole was the size of a tennisball and the exit took the entire shoulder off and was hanging by the skin.
Maybe it was just the way it hit.

I also run them in my Marlin full size lever action (not a guide gun).
Both are open sights and group 3" or less at 100 yards if I am having a good day.

If your Cowboy 1895 is like mine (1895CB), then it has the 26" tapered octagon barrel, and the Hornady Leverevolution loads are most gratifyingly accurate in that gun.

I put a Williams Guide peep sight on mine, that used the rear scope-mount holes and this made the rifle deadly out to 200 yards or perhaps a bit more. Plenty of sight radius there, only a tang sight would do slightly better, and they tend to detract from the gun's excellent handling qualities.

I have owned several Marlin 1895's... The CB model put all of the others to shame, it's in a class by itself. Handles like a dream, you get more velocity and accuracy than any of the other 1895 models.

Lots of fun to shoot, congratulations on getting the best of the 1895's.

it handles and shoots great. very happy with the accuracy on paper of the faster loads. I just didn't expect that the slower loads would drop that much. I guess it is what it is though.

I don't mind shooting the faster bullet....but I'm a little afraid of what that hornady plymer tip will do to the animal I'm aiming at. I don't want to grind them up too badly. for this year though it will have to do.

I wanted the one with the 26in barrel and could never find one. I finally found this one on the rack at cabelas by chance and decided to pick it up. its about the length of a regular saddle carbine...I figured that was good enough.

I think the polymer tip is purely a safety feature to allow the use of "more pointy" bullets in the tube magazine of our leverguns. It's not like a ballistic tip or other such animal.

The polymer tip is exactly what a ballistic tip is. The only difference is the hornady is a flex tip (read soft) so it wont poke the primer on the next bullet in the tube. I wouldn't expect them to perform like a flat point or round nose.

Still yet better off with his bolt action 270. Picking the best gun isn't the point something new fun and nostalgic all at the same time. Same reason I have a bow and a 54 cal smoke pole. Doing the same thing over and over and over and over gets boring.

I use Hornady Leverevolution for 30-30 and 45-70. Hard to beat Hornady Leverevolution in a tube feed system. I got the RCBS Seater Plug for my 45-70 dies for $7 from RCBs that is made special to reload Hornady Leverevolution 325gr 45-70. The recoil is different in a large mouth case like a 45-70 vs a bottle neck case. The recoil is more of a push back in place of the sharp recoil of a 300 win mag. The Hornady Leverevolution turn a Marlin 1895 SBL into a 200 yard gun that kicks butt.

I think its very practical on big pigs... My cousin cast bullets for his and reloads and regularly shoots it out to 400. At 400 he may or may not wear out the center of the O on the stop sign at the end of the street... of course he would never destroy state property. at 200 it will blow though a big sow and kill the piglet on the far side of her...
