After reading a article about rifle cleaning I apparently need to throw away all my rifle barrel because I have been cleaning them with a three piece rod and without a bore guide. Do you guys buy in to this or you just use good ole cleaning kits like me?

I use a nylon one piece cleaning rod and pointed jag for ALL my cleaning. I used to use a bore guide, but now I'm just really careful when I insert the rod.

Two things. Well three things.

You do need a one piece carbon rod.

Clean only when the barrel looses accuracy.

When you do clean, remove carbon, not copper.

I use a coated metal rod these days, and with a bore guide. I don't remove copper until it's time to remove copper, and it depends on the rifle as to how often that needs doing. The newish Brux barrel (260) doesn't seem to ever need copper removal. The oldish Douglas barrel (220) picks up copper and needs carbon and copper removed from time to time. Neither the Sako (270) nor the Ruger Hawkeye (223) seem to hold much copper.

IMO, a one-piece rod is a must, while a bore guide is a nice to have.

Just be careful and use plastic rod tips and brushes.

So explain how one would know exactly when one's trusty 30/30 loses velocity and needs cleaning.

JG, you should check out some of the criticisms of carbon fiber cleaning rods. I think it's well covered over at benchrestcentral. Stainless one-piece for me!

Hey, if you know of a better product. I'm paying attention. What's the benefit of going to stainless? More ridgid?

I'm big believer in a bore guide and no brushes. I use wipe out/patch out and if I clean at the range I'll use the accelerator too. It will remove copper and everything else. BoreTech Elminator is just as good but you need to use a brush. I made my decision to use wipe out after I cleaned two barrels with both and they looked very similar looking through a borescope. I was shocked it could chemically do what a brush is doing.

Most opportunity for you to do damage to your gun is cleaning it in my opinion. Be very careful around the crown and throat. Hence the reason I believe in a bore guide.

what bore guides are yall using?

I have cheap universal's from Sinclair but the poly caliber/action specific are better...I just never seem to get them ordered.

I have the Mike Lucas bore guides.

Those are the cat's meow...not sure I think they are worth that much more than the poly ones though.
