I am not a complainer usually, but this weekend was too much.

You know what really grinds my gears.. My neighbor across the road from our ranch in Rule Texas came into our gate and stopped me before I could get to the cabin after the hunt. He confronted me and said "y'all know we aren't shooting any young deer in this area. We need to get everyone on board yadadada."

I am all about game management but... Don't EVER tell me what I need to do on MY property. The thing that really bothers me about this, is the fact that he acts like he needs to tell me. We have 5 hunters that have been hunting for 20+ years. I think we get it at this point. Plus, my brother is in the navy and gets to hunt once every 5 years or so, I think it's safe to say he can shoot whatever he darn well pleases. I think this whole deer management thing has some people overthinking hunting and the outdoors in general. It's hard to just have a good time sometimes.

I agree, its reached a point that whitetail hunting is really no longer fun to me either.

On one side of the spectrum its "we are gonna shoot whatever we want (which is usually the first young buck with antlers) and you have a pasture devoid of any bucks older than 3 years old. any shot at a wall hanger is nil.

on the other end is the micro managed, deer has to be video taped and approved by a panel before you can shoot at it. even the does have harvest guidelines. Hunting this pasture is just as bad as hunting the other pasture because any deer you shoot you are scared to death of doing something wrong you won't even really enjoy it..

"cull buck" or "management buck" have to be the most nebulous, contentious terms ever discussed around a campfire.

In my area it's a bs term used to justify shooting whatever was shot. up

lol, I agree. there are two classes of bucks....the ones you want to reach maturity and breed and the ones you don't.

is pretty much that simple

You probably have more restraint than myself, I am sure that I would have flipped out on the guy and told him to mind his own business, just not in such nice terms. I am a believer in waiting until a deer matures to harvest them, but If its my property, nobody besides the state laws will dictate my actions.

Shoot whatever you want, as long as you call it a cull.

I like shooting young bucks just to watch the pro hunter wannabes get all wound up about it.

I agree with all of the above posts. But I have told the neighbors that WE won't shoot does until the population reaches CC. It's been 15 years and we are still well below CC. I would NEVER, EVER tell someone what they can or cannot shoot on THEIR property. It might just backfire, and they shoot anything that walks out. As far as your Brother goes, he has EARNED the right to shoot whatever legal deer that he wants. My 2 cents.

I've been on a lease where we had a hunter "deer shooter" who didn't even like deer meat. He'd go out and shoot does and just let them rot, or donate them. (Let them rot = let them sit outside for 6-7 hours before bringing them back to camp in the heat. I considered it rotten meat at that point). He would complain if anyone would shoot anything under a 16" spread, even if the deer was over 5 years old. His comment, imagine what it would look like next year. Heck, the only thing he wanted was the horns of the deer, and he refused to eat any meat from the deer. He'd complain to all the other hunters for deer that they would take because they wanted the meat. He went so far to demand people text him pictures of deer they shot when he wasn't there. Remember this is a paid hunter, not a lease manager.

This hunter, rather "Deer Shooter", even called the game warden and escorted the warden to the properties next door so that he could convince the neighbors not to shoot bucks unless they had a spread over 16". He did this to three of the four neighbors of the lease. To his surprise, none of the neighbors followed suit and shot what they wanted. He then wondered why someone would sneak onto our lease and vandalize stuff.

Needless to say, I didn't stay on this lease and left for better hunting conditions.

seen it on leases also. that & the antler size, yet whin they shoot deer, its ground shrinkage. helped explain why credit adviser said leasing is bad investment leases we were on were family. 1 buck county. ya bust your butt at work, listening ta the man complain how bad the economy is. while your in LOW income. & they got lawyers on payroll thinking of loopholes. hunting was theropy. we hunted for the meat. i got years of deer tags hangen on wall, that's my choice. cheers on thread flag
