The old rule of thumb is to give them 20 minutes before you approach them. Everyone gets anxious to see the animal, but it's always better to let them sit a while before you approach them.

Where did the first shot hit the buck?

I've see a deer do it one time, he was hit in the antler and knocked him out. When the hunter walked up to the buck, it stood up and started walking away.
