Today was opening day for Missouri Rifle deer season. My quest for a buck ended at 0650 this morning when a nice 10 point paused just a little too long at 45 yards. He went down DRT from a neck shot. Was using my Glenfield 30-30. Since it was early & cold (19 degrees), and I still had an antlerless tag left I decided to let him sit and hunted some more.
At 10am I got down and went over to him. While I was standing there removing some of my insulation I noticed movement to my left about 65 yards out. It was another deer. Thinking it may be a doe to fill my other tag, I waited. After it got closer I could see it was another buck (big body, but forkhorn I later saw). I watched him come down the same trail my first deer followed. He got about 12 yards from me (I am standing out in the broad open) before he stopped, looked around then turned and trotted off (tail down). Interesting interaction.
My youngest son got a buck too- thought it was a doe (no antlers). It was not a button buck. Biologist said it was a 2 1/2 year old. Barely even had a pedicle. His deer DRT also. One shot from his M4 .223 with 62gr hollow point ammo.
Both of my boys saw several spikes (one with only one antler that they said was about 11 or 12 inches long.
Older son and I will go out again tomorrow to fill our tags before the snow starts about 11AM or so. Expecting 1-4 inches by 5PM. Deer should be moving early because of future snow and temps in low / mid 20s.

Day 2 went terrible. Locals decided that it was a good day to ride their ATV /UTVs. Then heard dogs barking. Short time later a buck hopped the fence onto my property and ran off (only had a doe tag anyway) followed soon by the dogs. Had a run in with some hunters (owners of previous dogs). Said they were trailing a deer they wounded. We had fresh snow- showed them the only tracks followed by the dogs HAD NOT A SINGLE DROP OF BLOOD. Asked them 'nicely' to leave. Soon after that I think they borrowed the ATV /UTVs from earlier and decided to ride the fence around my property until dark.
My older son is going back out tomorrow by himself. I have to work or I would be out with him. My next chance will be Thursday afternoon- then all the way thru the weekend.
