Allot of guys here have used that, you will have to take a rake and get good soil to seed contact or you're spinning your wheels. Remove as much vegetation that is on top. Little late foe this year I'd imagine though.

The area were im wantin to plant it is only a bb out an acre. Its just grass right know so I can take a weed eater this spring and clear it out. Do I need to add fertilizer?

Don't waste your money. If you can not get the soil to seed contact, the seeds will most likely not germinate.

An acre will wear your azz out trying to do it that way, you'd be better off to rent a tractor

I don't like it since it is mainly ryegrass. If you move the area and time your seeding at the right time on wet soil and right before a good rain a lot will grow. The more soil contact the better it will be. Disturb the soil and drag to cover seed the better the plot will be. Get a bag of ryegrass, it will grow on concrete if it rains enough.

Don't waste your money. If you can not get the soil to seed contact, the seeds will most likely not germinate. And the birds will have a feast.

I have planted throw and grow with great success. There a few steps that you must do in order to make it successful.
1) clear the spot - I like to spray ground clear in May and re-apply in july if needed
2) Use a rake and "score" the ground
3) spread the seed and also spread some 13/13/13 fertilizer
I tried some of the new Extreme oats this year and it worked awesome. The birds don't mess with oats and small seeds like clover....not as much as they do wheat/corn/beans.
Do your homework and with a little rain, you could have a nice plot.

Should have added that I try to plant after Sept 1st (and try to time a rain).

Last thing and most important....if your area doesn't get 25" of rain or better on average, I wouldn't even try to plant food plots.

Save your money and get a 50lb bag of rye and you will get more bang for your buck.. Deer will eat it since it stays tender durring the late season were oats will be tough and browse will be gone.. It's only a filler though but better than nothing... Plus they will use it as a bed if they don't eat it lol

Last thing and most important....if your area doesn't get 25" of rain or better on average, I wouldn't even try to plant food plots. Yep, and is a catch-22. If it rains enough for the food plot to thrive, there will also be lots of natural vegetation around. No rain and not much natural stuff making a food plot sound good, the plot won't do squat either.

Anther vote for rye grass. Get the 'Oregon' rye from tractor supply. Don't get the 'Pennington' grass from Loews, Home depot, etc. Haven't had luck with it. 'Oregon' is $29.99 a 50# bag right now at T.S....And it's never too late to throw it out.
