I know it's early, but with this cold weather furs will be turning soon. What are prices going to be like on coons, cats, and foxes?

for coyote I think it depends on how well fur hood lined coats are selling at burlington coat factory and what the supply of Chinese dog fur is for the year

Curtis try foothold traps . Post or dirt hole set. I prefer post set with a urine lure.

Fur Price Update 11/21/14
FUR PRICING INFORMATION
Unless Russia and China collapse we will still be buying fur this year.
Water thawed fur will not have a lot of value. These rot quickly and we cannot give you a good grade. Leave all Beaver froze with no meat showing.
GREEN FURS PREFERED--Do not expect more value in dried furs at this time.
All of Louisiana North of 1-10 TO Baton Rouge [some exceptions] all East Texas above 1-10 to Okla. Border--West to 1-35. Note that North Texas and North Louisiana above I-20 and Mississippi Delta fur will grade out better than rest of area on some items.
BOBCAT----May be 15% to 20% less than last year. Very dangerous item because of Russia. Ruble (their dollar) has fell 25% this year! Oil has fell $300.00 this fall and Russia sells a lot of oil. A lot depends of Russia's economy.
BEAVER-----Still worth trapping. Expect them to be 10% to 15% under last year.
GREY FOX---We expect prices to be 40% less than last year.
RED FOX----We expect prices to be under $15.00.
COON---Will start out under $4.00.
COYOTE--No value at this time.
OTTER---Good otter will start out at $25.00 and down.
MINK-----We will try to have a price before December.
POSSUM----We will try to have a price before December.
SKUNK ----No market for them at this time.
Southern Muskrat---- Many may average $4.00.
Green Beaver Caster----$15.00 lb.

Unless someone is a trapper they may not be aware that in recent years Russia and China have been driving the market. The current Russian troubles have made the likelihood of an embargo against buying American fur an issue and the Chinese economy is slightly down. I think the deal in China is they make fur garments that end up being sold elsewhere although some hides, like bobcat stay in China (They sew up the white bellies to make a snow leopard type garment). In the last few years fur prices soared, well over $1,000 EACH for some really prime Rocky Mountain bobcats, all prices were up but the market just tanked from over supply and it looks like a 30 % or more drop. The other issue is non-prime furs. In boom times you might be able to sell them but when the market tanks only the best hides sell and the rest are un-marketable. If you just have a few hides- local muzzle loader rendezvous gatherings or craft fairs are possible markets.

Some good info stated already with Russia's problems and current economy situations and issue with china as well. What needs to be adressed is that fur is a commodity and with the falling price of oil ALL commodities will follow. There's sooo many factors that play into the fur market that drive prices up or down. I follow the market daily and I promise to every hard working trapper and fur hunter that I will offer the absolute best price that I possibly can for your hard work that the market will allow me to offer without loosin money. Feel free to give me a shout anytime to talk more in detail about the subject because I can talk about for days seeing this is what I live and breath for.

What every trapper or hunter also needs to realize is that you need to be the judge on what furs are worth targeting and the quality of the fur that you process. Small coon will have little value as well as thin canine. You shoul be the judge if that animal is worth your time to process or not. It's tough for a trapper not to skin and try to make money off everything that you catch but a little knowledge of what pelts will actually make you some money and which ones are going to take more time to process than dollars gained

For me, a lot of trapping is about the sport, the idea of outfoxing a fox. If I can sell and make a little money then fine. On the coon, I think there are some hound hunters that want live coon to train their dogs. There is also a small market in some places for coon meat. Laws change all the time so check the current law on these. In any event, it never hurts to think about options. I my humble opinion trapping might be about the hardest way there is to make any money. Up before dawn, long lines, animals to haul, at day's end, still hours skinning and stretching the hides. Work, work, work. It is a thing of fascination and love. Question, never caught a ringtail cat. In a national trapping publication there was a photo of a guy over in NE New Mexico that had 4 or 5 ringtails. Would be fun just to say you caught one. Any one know anything as far as sets?

Bucket set guarded with a 110 conibear is best for ringtails. Followed by a regular cage trap. The convenience of the bucket set is that the ringtail is already dispatched for you, just need to get there early if its over 65 degrees. The cage trap will get em for you too, just need a large trash bag, rubber hose, duct tape, and your truck's tailpipe for a no holes dispatch.

have caught ringtails in all kinds of sets, nothing special needed, just have to get where they're at. do think i caught more in a cubby set, similar to the bucket set that texaswats mentioned above, using bait as opposed to urine etc. one major problem is they have almost disappeared over parts of west texas in the last 15 years. diseae or something has hit them hard. used to catch/kill 15- 20 a year, now not very many. in fact i don't shoot em any more

in Texas it is illegal to:
Take furbearing animals with connibear style traps with a diagonal opening greater than 10 inches set on land or in less than 6 inches deep water
Not sure what the diagonal opening of those pictured above is, but something to keep in mind.
A 110 is just under 6inches diagonal I believe.

Jeez, I remember trapping/hunting in the 80s and even an average coon was $8-10, and I sold some for $20-25. Heck, we used to get $1-2 for a whole jackrabbit. Took 10 coon hides in one day and walked off with $150. Oh well, nothing you can do to control the market.

Yeah- fur prices bounce around a lot. Those bobcat in the Rocky Mountains...as I understand it the most prized of all fur in China is the snow leopard but it is fully protected. Some guy found out you could take the white belly of a bobcat and if you sewed them together- looked just like snow leopard. Suddenly bobcat prices soared to 1,000 to $1,800 per bobcat. I have no idea on the cost of the fur coat but it must be some kind of trophy wife to get her something like that. Years ago I was pursuing a gal that wouldn't go out with me unless I got her some alligator shoes. What she wanted them for I had no idea. Well, I went to Louisiana and then out into the swamps and finally saw a gator I dived in on top of it, and dragged it out on shore and flipped it over and...."that alligator got no shoes???? what was that woman talking about?"

Lol Dave, Yes the market is forever changing and follows the economic condition of certain countries, price of oil, value of the US dollar. Take the cats for example like you say Dave, with where the Russian ruble is currently valued, a cat that sold for a $100 last year will be at $59 this year if the buying is the same. That's just straight dollar value decrease alone.
