Where I hunt is public land. I hunt out of a pirogue and the lake I hunt is big water so I'm stuck hunting the island close to the bank. I went out this morning and there are blinds built on every island but no one hunting. I set up where I normally do with one of there blinds about 20 yards from me. I know it's public land but don't want to make anyone mad if they show up with me 20 yards away, but it's my only option with my setup. I hunt alone 99% of the time and am pretty new to duck hunting. Most people in this area are not the ones that say hey join our group or will join you if asked. I hate stepping on people's toes with the work they put into building these makeshift blinds every 3-400 yards apart.
I saw big groups landing near one island that they have built a blind on that takes up the whole circumference of the land probably 20x20' area that I'm really wanting to hunt but would have to pretty much set up and hunt out of their blind and really don't feel comfortable with doing that if they show up and start a confrontation.
What are y'all's opinions?

If you get there first, hunt the blind. It's public land and I know how it is in the area you are hunting. It would be one thing if you were hunting out of blinds other people brushed up and built 7 days a week and you had other options but there isn't any way to get away from the blinds that someone already built, so just use them.

Its public...... Doesn't mean they might not see it like that though but its not solely their land to use.

If it was a blind that I build and I showed up and found someone in MY blind...I'd offer them a cup of coffee and ask if I could hunt with them. It's public land. If someone beats me to the spot I was wanting to hunt, it's up to ME to find a different spot or make a new friend.

First one to the spot gets it, unless they have a permit for that blind which some hunting areas allow. I hate permanent blinds on public, permanent blinds should be left for private water hunting.

The lake shore I frequent will have some pretty elaborate "temp" blinds set up. They are made out of brush and scrap. If I'm the first one there, its mine, if not, I move on down the line. First come - First served.

I never understood why people want to build and leave blinds on public land.
If you're there first ask them to join if they show up, otherwise tell 'em to go kick rocks.

Climb in and enjoy. If anyone wants to join in I will invite them.I dont really care who built the blind. But I hate to say that would only be where I dont normally hunt. If someone puts up a blind around my normal spots I erase it from the face of the earth. Hulls trash and anything that resembles a blind. Last thing I want is to have someone come by and see that there must be ducks in the area by all the hulls laying around a brush blind.

During the week especially don't feel bad the guys that built them are more than likely just hunting weekends.

The coast just plays by different rules, that's all. The outfitters go build the blinds and decoy them up so they can run as many groups as possible. Some decoy all the blinds and leave them out all season, some put out decoys when they put a customer in that blind.
It's REALLY big water and that's part of it, having blind setups for when the flight paths change. Add in mud, oysters, shallow water navigation, it just makes sense.

I struggle with this. I know that I have every right to hunt it, but I would rather avoid unneeded confrontation in the middle of nowhere, in the dark, at 4 am. But if I really knew the ducks would be there then I would probably hunt out of it. Then maybe let them join me, depending on my mood.
Since I have a dog now I just want to see birds down so she can get retrieves, so if more people means more birds I am fine with that. But, then I worry about these randos' safety. I don't want myself or my dog to get shot.

Whoa there big man. Torches are expensive, use a roadflare. It gives you more time to get out and move along before the blind is fully engulfed!!!

On public it's always First come, First served!
The only time that doesn't come into effect is if you showed them your spot and they showed up without you! Then it's whoever is quicker on the draw!

If you're there first ask them to join if they show up, otherwise tell 'em to go kick rocks. They build em to keep people like the op out of "their" spot. I still put perm deer stands up in MN on public land. Little different ball game there though, lots more public land. I build em with the understanding that I could show up one day & there could be someone in it. Personally, I won't deer hunt out of another mans stand, but I wouldn't think twice about hunting another mans duck blind. If they show up & are jerks, just be the bigger man, bow out & next time you're in the area burn it to the ground
Cigarettes are like hamsters. Perfectly harmless til you put it in your mouth & light it on fire

Use it, if they show up, if you want let them join you. If they are horses rear ends, personally I would move on. But they might have mess to clean up the next time they showed up.

Durn rough crowd here. And I thought crappie fishermen were bad about "their" brushpiles. If it's on public land it belongs to everyone. Hunt it or like in crappie fishing, fish it.

I hunted a blind on public once. It was a few years ago, a member here on this forum invited me on a public hunt, it was a walk-in hunt, he told me he found this blind the day before scouting, and there were ducks. I said lets do it.
We get to blind, get all set-up, deeks set out, enjoying coffee and shooting BS way before legal, then here come the head lights.... There was about 4 of them, when they get to us one says "I built this blind." And I said "You did one hell of job, nice work." They all kinda chuckled, and then it got silent. And I said "You can't build a blind to reserve your spot." He said "I know" and was a good sport about it, and said something to the effect of "I just wanted to say hi and let you know I built it" or something like that, and they moved on a good distance away and built another blind lol.
I would have invited them to hunt with us, but no way we would of all fit in the blind. It was a heck of a sturdy blind, I bet it is still there unless someone burned it down. This guy had decoys hidden as well, so he did not have to carry decoys in.

There are lots of personal blinds on the public land here in Nebraska. 90% of them have the owners name and usually has a list of things to do after the hunt is over....like turn off the propane and cleanup the area (shells, trash, etc). It is first come, first served and most play by the rules. I have walked up on several people hunting about an hour or so before LST. Most of the time, they ask me to hunt with them. Have made several friends this way. Of course, I have offered up my area when I was there first on several occasions too. It sure is nice to have 1,000,000 people's worth of limits flying and only 20 hunters...unlike when I was in DFW...have 20 limits flying around for 5,000 hunters on each public DFW lake!
