It sounds like he is still alive and trying to lay up but yall keep jumping him. I would back off and go back tomorrow. Good luck.

Recovery was unsuccessful however the deer is still alive... for now at least.

Mike Chittum and his dogs Jesse and Cutter were phenomenal. After three hours of tracking a stone cold trail, one of the dogs stumbled across the scent of the deer a quarter of a mile from where I had shot him. The smaller of his two dogs had it bayed briefly before we could get to it and it busted and ran like a bat out of hell. I saw the buck crash thru the thicket with the dog close behind up to a fence line -- buck went over but dog couldn't. Me, Mike and his other dog caught up to the first dog who was unable to cross the fence. It was clear this buck still had plenty of juice and we would run him to the next county if we didn't back off.

Please keep sarcastic comments to a minimum and no armchair quarterbacking as my nerves are a little raw right now. Obviously if I had it to do over again I would do a lot of things differently. But I gave it everything I had and then some for 49 hours.

Bottom line, I made a poor shot -- rushed it and pulled it. Instead of high shoulder most likely hit forward in his brisket. My hope is that he is such a tuff son of a gun that he makes it for somebody else, if not me to get a chance at him.

It will happen to everyone if they hunt long enough Red. Just sucks that it happened on such a incredible buck.

You did everything you could to recover him. That's all anyone can do in that situation.

Tough deal. You will see him again on a food plot or at your feeders. IME it might a couple of weeks though if you hit him like you think. You did all you could when called in the dogs cheers

If he had that much energy for that long, he will most likely pull through. Maybe you'll get that 2nd attempt. You did put forth a great effort. clap

Maybe. Just heard from tracker that when he got his dogs out at home he realized that buck gored the one that had him bayed. Puncture wound to hind quarter. Buck (and dog) still had plenty of fight left in.

Dang.

No rude comments here, we've all done it. Here's hoping you get another chance and that the buck makes it till then.

Its happens to the best of us!!! You put in a valiant effort to get him and besides if he went this long and still had fight in him, he'll probably be ok!!! I hope you get another crack at him!!!

Hit my first buck forward in the brisket. He lived to be hunted another day.

You did right, attempted to make a recovery, sometimes it just aint in the cards. Better luck next time.

Hell of an effort you gave. Them big boys can get the best of any of us. Sounds like the deer still had more than enough fight in him and should live to breed another day

Just catching up. Sorry to hear Red. He's alive and will more than likely make it. Seen a brisket shot buck chasing doe before the wound was even healed.
