So are any of you practicing in this weather? I plan to go Friday afternoon to work on a little load development...need to get the MV on my 6.5 Creedmoor and then I'm going to head over to the 1200 yd range and send a few down range! I love shooting in the cold weather!

Shot in it all day yesterday with a 10+ mph north wind. Just made a cold bore shot at 500 the day before with a 20 mph south wind. Weired the winds can be that strong out of both directions one day to the next.

But in the cold you had better be able to get the density altitude and temp factored in prior to your shot. 80F DOPE aint the same as 40F DOPE.

Question for the ignorant.... What difference does it make between 80 degrees and 40 degrees?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

cool exercise. Go to like the G7 ballistics program (free) and input different variables for your rifle and you will be surprised what differences it makes.

Temperatures deal with air densities and can also jack with the burn rate of your powder depending on your load and change your MV therefore changing your point of impact. Good information to know if you shoot distance.

^^^ This is why I don't recommend the BDC type turrets.

I shot a good bit in below 30° temps last year. I think you can hear the steel better.

yesterday i ran 300 rounds through the AR and 150 through the pistol, my hands were froezen but it gave me good practice on trigger control with cold fingers, also made me focus on mag changes and failure drills.

Cold air is dense air. Dense air causes a bullet to lose velocity more rapidly. Tuesday I was shooting a friend's 308 Win to 800 yards. I had DOPE from 80 degree weather. Well, to get my client to get hits at 800 yards I had to add .4 Mil to the elevation. Bullet slows down in flight, bullet falls to earth more, raise elevation in the scope to compensate. Keep in mind 308's are very sensitive to this outside 500 yards. A 6.5 Creedmoor or 7-08 will hold up better to about 700 then temp becomes more of a factor. That's BC and MV for ya.

Another example. Many years ago when I first started shooting longer ranges, I had a feeder we set up from camp that was exactly 640 yards away. I put a 10" steel plate hanging next to it. I get to camp one afternoon and confirm my dope at 640 when it's 75-80 degrees. The next morning, I take a shot at a doe when it was about 30 degrees. I missed right under her belly. It was all due to the low temps. You must account for EVERYTHING when shooting out past about 400 and 500 yards.
