I have a doe coming to the feeder like clockwork, every morning and every evening with what appears to be a set of triplets on her. My question is, How common is triplets in whitetails? I have never seen a set of triplets so I was wondering if maybe she had twins and adopted an orphan. The young ones are all the same size and act like siblings. Whatever the case, she gets a free ride this season because the fawns look young and she is doing a good job of raising them.

Not that uncommon on some ranches in really wet years. I have seen maybe 5 sets of triplets over the years that I can remember and it could have been more.

I was told by a Texas wildlife biologist that 50% of bred does produce twins otherwise a single fawn. Fawn survival rate is completely different and varies greatly (20-70%). A lactating doe requires twice the protein - she will abandon one of the fawns if she can't produce enough milk. I have never seen triplets - I would imagine it is extremely rare.

I've seen it once. That is definitely a doe you want to protect.

I will throw this out there. If you are under-populated then keep her for a couple of more years. If you are over populated then I would shoot her(late in Dec or in doe season in Jan after fawns are old enough), you don't need a herd full of does producing triplets every year. You will never be able to shoot enough deer to help your population problem. 2cents

We have a whitetail doe that has a set of triplets and a mule deer doe that also has a set of triplets. Sort of neat to see them at the feeders.

scratch most of the does with single fawns, usualy being yearlings. tis thinking more like 65% twins, 25% single, & 10% tripplets. a lot depending on protein available, harseness of weather. english held me back from being biologist, more of a postaddic observationalist, my posts are cheep. flag

Can't recall every seeing triplets, at least to the point I was positive they where all the does. I have seem many time, does "babysitting", other yearlings, but more than likely the extra youngin just tagged along . They will wonder some.

I have seen a few doe with triplets during pre-season/season but no way to know for sure if all three were from that same doe, orphans possibly or could be actual triplets?

I do recall taking a doe real late one season, might even been in the late doe/spike portion (or later cool) , upon field dressing her, found she was pregnant with 3 well defined fetuses. I mentioned to the ranch owner & my dad, they told me it was pretty common with older does during good years with lots to eat to have triplets, but rarely would all three survive past their spots stage. I took their word for it, but that one doe was the only one I have personally found to have triplets for sure.
