I've always used the one you screw into a propane bottle. Never had any issues.

Mr Buddy. Had mine for at least 5 years. Starts right up every year and keeps it toasty. Last weekend I was in jeans and a sweater with the heater going. It was in the high 30's

If you run one of the bbq tanks on the buddy heater, you're supposed to have a filter on it. Apparently, you're also supposed to replace that filter once a year. If you haven't, go buy one now. I just now had my filter let loose, heard a pop, and everything got real bright. Had fire coming out the inlet junction on the tank. Fortunately, I have cat-like reflexes, so I immediately soiled myself, kicked the heater, screamed expletives like a young female seaman, and then thought to turn off the gas.

This is after several years of having one of these in my blind. Originally I was told that the unit would simply fail to light when the filter got clogged and needed replacement. Cheap insurance against a cold morning of open flamed excitement.

I woulda paid to watch that. Glad you're ok.

I'm on the fence about heaters. I've never used one, but believe in keeping the little folks comfortable. I'm sure when (and if, I'm trying not to push too hard) my grandson is ready to sit, I'll have him bundled up like the Pillsbury dough boy and the Mr. Heater glowing.

My parents sent me out on my first Boy Scout campout with my Sears Junior sleeping bag. I stuck out of it about a foot and a half. We got the Polar Bear award that weekend - got down to 13 degrees. Most miserable night of my life. Still like camping though.

Thanks for this info. I ran mine all of last year with the filter and one of the large BBQ tanks and did not know I should replace the filter. up

Can I ask why the filter? Is the gas dirty in those big tanks compared to Coleman tanks?

I use the little heater that screws on to the 1 lb bottle, Contico brand I think. Paid less than $20 for it. I had the buddy heater but it got stolen! The cheaper one works just fine. Back in the day I used the old school heater - a coffee can, roll of TP and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol. Just enough heat to keep you comfortable.

They can get rust chips/flakes from the inside, what a propane guy told me when making a delivery once.

Doesn't the igniter make a loud snap or popping noise when you turn on the heater? Do or can you use a lighter instead?

It should be plenty early to start it up in my opinion. I guess a lighter aint as loud, tho it does still pop

Yea. Buddy. My best friend. I might forget to load my rifle but I don't forget to bring an extra can of propane.

My Coleman heater just failed. I took two of my Coleman propane lanterns, took out the glass and wrapped them in foil. Plenty of heat, very little, if any light. Hey, I'm the Fred Sanford of THF. Works for me and saves $

Mr Heater Buddies are great to break the chill. Sportsman Guide has device to refill the small canisters from larger propane bottle.
