Acquired shooting skills, especially long range skills, are perishable if not practiced regularly. Truth is most hunters will never shoot beyond 200 yards. Those who have trained at distances beyond 500 are probably in the 1 percentile or less. Those who could consistently seal the deal at 800-1000 yards are so miniscule that it's not even worth mentioning. Even if someone trained once at 800 yards, the likelihood that they continue to train at that distance is very unlikely. Most people simply do not have regular access to public or private ranges that offer those distances.

So the argument that "this round or that isn't a good LR caliber" is pretty much moot. Now we're right back were we began. Choose a rifle that you're comfortable with and in a caliber that gives you the confidence you need and go hunt.

All a fellow needs is a 243, or a 250 Savage, 257, 260, 7-08, etc. If the caliber will push a 100 gr bullet at 2800 fps or more (or even a bit less), it'll do just fine.

I love my 250 savage. Just wish factory ammo wasn't nearly impossible to find. I bought a .270win just for that reason.

Time to take up reloading. Fresh, once-fired, or annealed, .22-250 cases can easily be necked up to .250 Savage with one pass through a .250 FL die. Just lube the case necks real good with One Shot or motor mica.

Bet you would be surprised I could show you a pile of film and picks and kill shots from customers that shoot in the 5-800 yard range.. Will agree that for TEXAS your answer is correct but out west is nothing like what we do here for shooting.

I was in your place a few years back and decided on a 7mm-08, because is a sweet round that can be used from varmints to deer and even for bigger game such as elk or moose.
