For everyone that chooses neck shots on deer, what part of the neck do you aim for? The base of the neck toward the body, middle of the neck or closer to the head?

I go for base of the neck if I can get a clean shot. All the ones I've shot there were DRT

I don't shoot neck shots anymore. I have seen a lot of deer killed with the shot but also have seen to many deer that were wounded with the shot that was only off a little and they missed the spine/neck bone. I shoot all hi-point of the shoulder shots now.

Small margin for error on a neck shot-like stx said, it's easy to wound one. If you just have to anchor a deer and have a DRT, use the high-shoulder shot. Personally, I try to shoot all mine behind the shoulder in the heart/lungs.

I used to take only neck shots. Now I shoot body shots some time and neck shots for the close easy shots. The last 2 deer I shot at feeders were about 80-90 yards solid rest and they weren't jumpy I aim wherever the crosshairs settle on the deer, sometimes its right below the jaw sometimes its just a few inches in front of the shoulder.

A deer has to be 30 yards or less (which some might call bow range) for me to take a neck shot. And even then, it has to be the only shot available on a deer that appears apt to wind me being so close. And there has only been one such case in all my 40+ years of hunting them.

And like others here, I aim for the middle of the lower neck to break the spinal column.

Base of neck shot with 7mm mag at 85 yards. She was facing me when I took the shot, thus the rear exit.

I'll take another slant on this....some have stated based on distance, I also determine based on the terrain. I hunt in a couple of places in Miss where it is very snarly and swampy - if you absolutely need to drop him at broadside or quartering away I like the base of the neck, quartering to you I like the clavicle.

That's probably driven by the margin of error for a neck shot is less than half that for a heart and lung hit.

I don't shoot big deer and I shoot deer to eat so all I shoot is the neck. If I can't get a good shot I don't shoot.

Stopped doing neck shots after hitting one just a tad off high and had to chase her for 200 yards before getting another shot on her. All the damage the bullet did was mess up the muscle that held the head up. Deer kept tripping over it's head.
Since then I put a round in the 'armpit' on broadside shots and on any angle shot try and take at least ONE shoulder out.
The amount of meat messed up on a shoulder shot is a lot less than the amount of meat messed up on an un-found animal. Besides, I prefer that my tracking chores be 3' straight down.
