Thanks guys...God is good! This Friday and Saturday was my first time out this season as I've been pretty busy, so I've been prayerful on maximizing the few opportunities I can get in the field this season. I wasn't selected for a doe permit this year, so I was concerned that it would be slim pickings since I was limited on what I could harvest.
I went to a spot that isn't heavily hunted where I've seen nice bucks for the past couple of years, but for one reason or another wasn't able to close the deal. Made it out late morning Friday and walked a few familiar areas and came across a few fresh scrapes. Took a lunch break and went to Walmart and picked up some Special golden estrus. I put a little on a scent wick and drug it to the scrape and put some on the scrape. Set up in my climber about 25-30 feet up a pine tree and waited all afternoon and didn't see anything but squirrels dropping hundreds of acorns from the oak trees. Came down when it started to get dark around 5:45p.m. and left my climber hidden as I planned to stay at a friends in Huntsville and come back early the next morning.
I made it back to my stand a little after 6:00 a.m. and got settled in. I sat there for a couple of hours enjoying nature and just being thankful to be out. The temps weren't too warn nor too cold and there was a bit of an overcast with a little sun peeking through revealing the hint fall colors starting to show in the leaves. About 8:40 I heard a crackle and looked down to see this great buck sniffing the scrape. He started walking to the next scrape sniffing the air and I put the cross hairs on him and dropped him in place.
I came down from the tree and examined my prize, kneeled down over him and gave thanks to God for the successful harvest and the sacrifice made to put meat on our table. Then I commenced to dragging that heavy joker back to the truck. He was extremely heavy and I had to stop every so many yards to rest and catch my breath for nearly a mile back to the truck. Though it was a task I finally got it done and I took him to my friends in Huntsville who helped me to skin him. It was a pretty good weekend and I'm a happy camper.

Great SHNF buck! That deer is a trophy for sure; that place is tough to hunt. Great outlook from you as well. Congrats to you

Great buck anywhere and super special on public land, congrats! A biology prof of mine in college (many years ago) hunted SHNF and consistently took bruisers. His method was to get as far back in the bedding thickets as possible and set up where they bed at. And live there during daylight. Packing the deer out was tough, as it was for you I'm sure. Congrats again!

I've hunted sam for the last 7 years. Have not taken a buck yet. Have never seen a buck during hunting season that was wider than 13". I have seen and passed on several spikes, and have also seen more than 100 basket racked deer that were probably 6-8" inside spread-mostly 4-6 points. What you have accomplished is not normal. You my friend are blessed.
Congratulations on a great buck. That is a LIFETIME buck for Sam Houston. Honestly if I shot something that looked like that in Sam, I would seriously give up hunting as that would be the best it would/could ever get. I know Sam has been under antler restrictions for I think 8 years now? But I'm still only seeing an abundance of basket racked deer in the places that I hunt.
Have you aged that deer to see how old he is? I would love to get an accurate age on him. You scored big time. You can't see it, but I'm bowing to you right now.

Congratulation on a Public buck that is beautiful. Good hard work, and it paid well. What did you shot him with.
