I have a young family member from OK coming down and he wants to go hunting. He is 14 so he does not need a license or an APH but he does need a hunter ed course I think?

The TPWD says accompanied by someone with who has it?

My question is can he take that in Oklahoma and have it be valid here in TX or is he exempt because I am with him?

Not 100% sure on what TPWD is saying

It looks pretty clear to me. This is directly off the TPWD website.

Who needs to take Hunter Education?
Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Minimum age of certification is 9 years and cost is $15.

If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are:

under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied*.
age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete a hunter education course, or you must be accompanied.
age 17 and over, you must successfully complete a hunter education course; or purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral,” and you must be accompanied.

Nope, there are exceptions.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/hunting-licenses-and-permits
Quote:
A hunting license is not required to hunt the following:

Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals or fowl.
Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner (resident or non-resident) or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land.
Fur-bearing animals, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license or if the fur-bearing animals are causing depredation.

For $7 get him a license. Not sure what you will be hunting with him but that way it is covered and he will have his first out of state license.

For hunters education get it done, valid in all states and provides some good information to a new hunter and sometimes an older hunter. If not able to get it done in time for the hunt get the deferral, easier that way than a ticket from the GW if checked. Also the price of the deferral goes toward the price of Hunters Education when taken within a year.

Thanks guys I did not realize he needed a youth license so we will stop at TPWD before we start. I was born in 1969 so I am exempt but I will try to get his parents to get him a hunters ed course before he comes down. Cant hurt
