Opening day of rifle season I climbed into my ground blind about 4pm. I had already taken my buck in bow season so my main focus was hogs. Just before I headed to the lease I had found a few pics of a really big Boar on some of my cameras and I decided he would be the one I would hunt opening weekend.

Opening morning I had taken a pretty big Sow out of this same stand so I wasn’t sure that lightning could strike twice in the same day out of the same stand but I was in for a real treat.

I had seen quite a few deer and many bucks chasing does dang near from the time I got in the stand. This years rut has been about a week later than normal but it has been as visable as I can ever remember seeing anywhere I have ever hunted. I was having a blast watching all the crazy chasing going on all around me!
Dark was coming pretty darn quick and I still had a few deer in front of me so I decided to wait until the guy that hunts down the road from me to come through and run my deer off with his ATV rather than have them see me get out of my stand.

I guess it was probably about 7:20PM and the deer all came to attention and were looking back towards me but I knew it wasn’t me they had spotted. I turned my head to my right and saw a single large boar trot out of the brush about 30 yards to my right. I knew right away by his size it had to be the boar I was looking for.
I scrambled to get the rifle out the window and get the shot off as quick as possible because I knew the other guy was going to be rolling by at any second. Once I found him in the scope he had covered about 70 yards and I couldn’t see the cross hairs of my scope against his dark body due to how dark it was. I had no choice but to guesstimate where my cross hairs intersected and I put that area of the scope just behind his shoulder as he was quartering away. I started to squeeze the trigger and was blinded by the muzzle flash. He took off and I had no idea if I had hit him or not.

After a few minutes I got out of the stand and went to where I thought he was standing and started searching for blood with the flash light. About that same time the other guy came rolling up and asked if that was me that just shot. I told him it was and that I thought I had shot a really big pig but couldn’t find any blood. I explained to him that the lack of blood really didn’t concern me though because my experience has been that really big pigs don’t bleed much at all and I wasn’t even 100% sure where he was when I shot anyway due to how dark it was.

After a few minutes and still no sign of a hit I told him we should probably just start looking for a body in the direction that he had run. We walked over to where I thought he crossed the road and he had barely made it across the road before crashing. He had probably covered about 50 yards from where I had shot him and the 6.8 Accubond had found its mark perfectly right in the upper arm pit area.

When I went to grab his ankles to drag him out to the road that’s when I knew he really was a big one. I have drug hundreds of hogs over the years and very few of them have had ankles that fill my hands but this one did. Once we got him loaded up it was clear that he is in the top 5 I have ever killed.
