The morning of the 7th I didn’t get up to hunt.

No reason other than just being lazy and wanting to sleep.
About 10AM I decided I needed to go change all the batteries in my cameras since they had been running since August on the same ones. I gathered up everything I thought I would need and then jumped on the 4-wheeler and headed that way.

As I drove up to one of my set ups I thought I saw a pig about 75 yards away. I shut down the ATV and thought it might be fun to try and shoot one if I could. Only problem was I didn’t have a rifle with me. For a split second I was kicking myself and then I remembered I had my Glock 33 on my hip. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to get into range with such a short little gun but I had to try.

I got off the ATV and moved into a better position to see how many there were and then decided the only way to get into range of them would be to backtrack about 50 yards into some Cedar and then head west to get the wind into my favor. I covered about 300 yards to get into position and once I got to where I wanted to be they were starting to spread out.

I dropped down to my knees behind some brush then drew my pistol from its holster and started to ease out where I could see them. The closest one was a smallish red Sow about 40 yards away so I decided that was going to be my target. When she turned broad side I sent a 357 Sig Speer Gold Dot her way. She dropped and rolled over then got up squealing like a pig as she ran off.

I really didn’t know what to think other than I knew I hit her. I started looking for my spent case just to kill some time before picking up the blood trail but never found it. I went to where she was standing and found some blood so I started to walk in the direction that she ran. Found some more blood, then some more and some more. I was really starting to get excited seeing that much blood because I really wasn’t expecting much of a blood trail at all since I didn’t expect to get a exit wound.

After about 60 yards of trailing I found her. The bullet had hit a little far back but at that distance I didn’t really care and I had me a pig to show for my efforts and that was good enough for me. Once I rolled her over I was able to see why I had such a good blood trail. Turned out I did in fact get a exit wound which really shocked me! I didn’t expect to get that much penetration at all from that distance.

My goal this trip was to get me a pig with my pistol. I just didn’t expect it to happen that way. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about it though. One of the best pig hunts I have ever been on…….if you even want to call it a “hunt”. clap
