I know TPWD guide says alert ears if outside that should be 13inches. Hunting first time in AR and looking to get in trouble. Is there any other ways people use to tell the spread.

Best decision is if there is any question, just pass. If it's not obvious then I'm not going to risk it.

Same here, I know that most the time if the ears fit inside the frame, he is gtg. On the line and I will likely pass.

Best way to tell is to shoot and measure it. Smartest way is like previously stated, in doubt, wait on another one.

Shoot it, measure it, if it's 13, you're good to go. If not, smash the skull, spread it out the remainder, and you're good to go.

I watched a tall- racked eight point this weekend that would most likely have passed. But it seemed the height of his rack gave off a bit of an allusion as to it's true width.

Haha, some funny answers, yeah didn't see anything today so didn't have to worry about passing or shooting but yeah that's my general rule if it's close just pass.

Back in the early 90's I used to put a strip of white duct tape with a black mark every 3" on the side of every protein feeder.

Already passed up a couple of "could be's". I just made my mind up that if I can't see an inch or more of space between tip of ear and main beam I'm not pulling the trigger.....Most of the time they're too young anyway!

That has always been my approach as well. I've got to see easily recognizable space between the outside edges of the ears in the alert position, and the inside of the spread.
