I hunt in an AR county and I have a buck about 3.5-4.5 that is outside his ears with good mass but has tines that are only 3-4 inches long. I was thinking about culling him but I don't want take that wide gene out of the pool if he'll get better. Have any of ya'll seen a low wide buck grow better tines as he ages?

I hate short tined bucks and it is very rare that one gets longer tines. What was he like last year?

It seems alot of times, if they have width they have short tines, narrow they have long tines, when you find one with both you got something! Like Stx said rarely seen them get much more tine length .

I don't think I saw him last year. I'd rather shoot him and leave my 3.5 year old tens alone.

Think so? I was thinking at least 3.5 due to his bigger neck and shoulders. I haven't gotten a chance to see him live yet. I think he came in right after legal shooting light yesterday but I couldn't see much. That's why I'm asking, I don't want to cut him down before his prime. Plus I love wider bucks around spreading the genes.

That pic is hard to tell much on. He does not look that old to me. His spread is about with his ears and he has really good brows for a younger buck. Can't tell much on the rest of his tines. If I had to guess from that pic I would call him a 2yr old and 3 max. Better pics will tell more.

In that one photo, he looks 2.5-3.5 to me, if he is older, "I'd probably have to take him and surely over a 10 if you want them to grow. My 1st 9 years on my little place, all I took was screwy type bucks like that, older ones with real weak sides or what not, this year I finally took a nice to me, symmetrical 8.

I personally don't like short tines, even if the spread is 36"! If I want that, I will buy another bicycle so I at least have chrome "handle bars" grin
