I get that they're proving a point but that just seems unsafe. Can he tell exactly where those bullets went?

The brakes help alot. On my 300 win mag after the brake it felt like a 243. Could shoot all day. Without it that's another story.

Most hunting guides won't allow them, and with good reason.

I've tried muzzle brakes and Magna-Port... Both do what they are supposed to, and both magnify the noise level, some worse than others.

In the end, I've found that I'd rather just handle the recoil and let it go at that. No more brakes for me.

Kind regards, charlesb

Everyone on the range or on the hunt near rifle fire should be wearing hearing protection anyway, brake or no brake.

A guide tells me "it's not allowed" and I will be speaking to him about a refund and going home.

Sometimes you have to be able to hear, while hunting. Walking around in the wild with your ears stopped up is a good way to get hurt. In many situations if you cannot hear the animal, you will not be aware that they are there. It's also good to be able to hear things like, "Hey, don't step on that snake!" and with hunting guides it is not uncommon to have whispered conversations while spotting game.

I check the rules while I'm shopping for a hunt, and don't wait until I've paid up and drove out there to discover what's up.

Personally, I'm not all that traumatized by occasional recoil. No more muzzle brakes for me, I've been there and done that. They're just not worth the trouble, it's another useless gadget that's not really necessary.

Of course he can. He knows where the rifle is pointed.

I must disagree, for me they are very useful...in fact they are a necessity.

As ubiquitous as these dreadful contraptions have become in hunting fields these days, any forward-thinking outfitter should spell out his objection to brakes in the pre-hunt contract. It is only fair and gets all misunderstandings aired well before it's too late.

I've been around numerous hunters who use and like brakes. But I've never met a guide who liked them. But I've never met a guide who openly complained about them to his "braked" client. Perhaps guides are polite and accommodating to a fault (they are). Perhaps braked hunters are great tippers (NOT!). Perhaps they keep their opinions to themselves(yep), but I can tell you that upon seeing my unbraked rifle, more than one grateful guide has then and there embarked on a expletive-infused tirade on the evil devices.

At the very least, any hunter shooting a braked rifle should provide quality muffs for his guide. He also should plan to tip exceedingly well. He should realize that it is also like farting in a two-man tent......it can be rude and inconsiderate, but it makes YOU feel better.....so why not!

I believe most brakers are unaware of the discourtesy thrust upon their companions.
Minimal....apologize to all around, or only hunt with other brakers. Better...provide hearing protection or consider unscrewing the brake and leaving the device at home.
Lacking that, think about hunting alone.

I agree that brakes are loud...frankly I don't like them and wish I didn't have to use them but this is kind of silly to me...all of this because a guide might be exposed to one...maybe two shots...really?

And as for bringing hearing protection for the guide...I think that's on him. That being said I always take extra hearing protection.

Really? Take it to the extreme and suggest hunters walk around deaf? That would be foolish.

Go to the local harware store or big box hardware store and see if you see rad band ear plugs. They are plugs on a rigid but flexible band that keeps them around your necak about 3" from your ears. Yes I have them, yes I have taken two extra seconds to put them in my ears.
