Never had this happen before. Found that my portable propane heater that I had used last weekend was leaking in my trailer. There was no noticeable odor, but the gas detector in my trailer told otherwise.

It must have been the control value on the heater itself because I was finally able to get the detector to stop alarming my unscrewing the propane canister from the heater itself.

No, thankfully.

I heard the alarm beeping when I arrived last night and walked up to the door of my trailer. I thought it might be dead battery in the smoke detector at first, but quickly recognized that it was LP gas alarm once I got outside. I've all but lost my sense of smell from past industrial work and just kept resetting it. Eventually I traced it to the heater I had put in the cabinet under the sink. I set it outside and opened the door to vent the trailer, then unscrewed the canister from the heater, thinking it was leaking through the value. Put both of them, now separate, back under the sink and having heard the alarm since.

Those LP gas alarms really do work, and thankfully so.

More than one hunter has died that way. I'm very scared of them. Always leave the roof vent a little open.

I think one of my neighbors to the North got blown up last night (small trailer park in the bushes). I was finishing up with the dogs last night and heard KABOOOOM. It wasn't a transformer, then heard the sirens coming...

Roof vents may not work, propane is heavier than air so it pools on the floor.

Also a carbon monoxide detector will not detect propane leak , it has to be an explosive gas/ co detector.

Well said, natural gas is lighter than air and even though you smell the mercaptan, the dangerous part is gone

Bingo. The detector is mounted about 10 inches off the floor, and the heater was under the sink at floor level. It was such a small leak that the propane evidently stayed close to the floor where the detector was able to detect it.

Two lessons learned. Disconnect the gas canister before storing, and invest in a LP gas detector if you have a trailer or cabin that makes use of it.

scratch hmm, could be. the kids were shorter. any way we still opened the roof vent, blankets, & turned propane off. guess we put em in harms way by moving em to lower bunk. ya can smell propane leaks . so U put your detectors low ta ground ta detect leaks faster? good thread flag

Yes all ways place your explosive gas detector for propane less than 12" from ground.

You and me both. I'll use an extra layer of blankets or a better sleeping bag before I risk being suffocated or poisoned in my sleep.

Missouri had one hunter fatality this year caused by a heater exploding in his blind. Have not seen anymore about the specifics of the incident.

One of the gentleman that Crappie Fishes on our Dock went to light one in his blind and it exploded and when he woke up he was laying outside the blind, is glasses were destroyed and semi melted..they said that was the Only reason he wasn't blind, there was a Corona bottle in the stand and it was melted.. he spent several days in Parkland burn unit. I don't know how it happened, he is not the sharpest tack in the barrel but he was lucky

These incidents, including my own, has me wondering if the control valves on some of these heaters might be suspect. With leaking gas settling near the floor or ground where these heaters are most often placed, it becomes easy to see how these accidents can occur. A guy climbs into his box blind where a pool of gas has pooled near the floor, reaches down and attempts to light a heater that he keeps stored in the stand and Ka-Boom!

As I mentioned before, I didn't smell a thing when I opened the door of my trailer.

If nothing else, it would appear a safe practice is to leave the door on box stands and blinds open for a few minutes before lighting propane heaters that are kept in them.

Another practice might be to disconnect the bottle on smaller heaters, or turn off the main supply line from tanks before leaving.

Okay, I get napping in the stand...

But you gotta be really asleep to nap through being burned alive. Maybe he passed out from the fumes too quickly?

He was on the ground outside the stand when found so he probably woke up. I don't think we'll ever know exactly what happened. I do know that I would never fall asleep with a sunflower type heater on.
