I asked a buddy this question and wasnt sure I got a good enough answer. If you shoot a buck and want to mount it how do you prepare it. He said gut it and drop it at the taxidermist. Well what happens to my meat was my next question. What do yall do for the taxi?

I've always taken my deer to the processor and tell them what I'm doing with the horns. If I tell them I want a shoulder mount, he'll know what to do. If I'm just doing a skull cap mount, sometimes he'll cut em off right there for me.

For the shoulder mounted bucks I've shot, when my meat was ready to pick up, they had the head and cape wrapped up in a trash bag, frozen. Haul booty to the taxidermist, and pass it off.

Gut, skin, cape, and quarter. Drop meat off at processor if you're using one and drop the cape/head off at the taxidermist.

I'm sure you can find a video on how to cape a deer, but I hang them by back legs when saving a cape. Instead of just using a mid cape, I go ahead and just skin them from their back hocks all the way down till the skin is rolled up on the neck behind the ears. This gets less hair on the meat. Then just cut the neck with a bone saw, place rolled up skin first in a trash bag all the way over the nose head and all. Then quarter and ice meat. I'm sure this is clear as mud. Lol

Yep, my taxi likes all the hide he can get too. If you aren't going to skin the whole deer, at least start behind the end of the breastbone/back edge of the ribs.

It depends on what the temp is and when you shoot it. If you shoot it in the morning, I gut it, and put bags of ice in the cavity to cool the meat and drive to the taxidermist. If in the evening and warm (above freezing), gut, skin, and quarter and take to taxidermist in the morning

Then do you skin it and get your meat at the taxidermists before you leave?

Breast bone is the minimum where I start, if I have time, I will skin it down as they said. Easier for a taxi to throw away hide, than to replace it for sure. Big deer I will take the lower neck measurement and pass that on too for reference.

A regular deer and I will split the breast bone as far as I can in the field.

Most processors will skin a deer for a shoulder mount for an extra fee. Skinning for a mount is not that much different than skinning a deer to quarter for processing. Lot of online resources to show you how to to do it.

Well first you get a pair of tall boots then you put its back legs in the front of the boots then you try to push it off a cliff. roflmao

Hang by back legs. Skin as normal being careful not to cut the skin from the chest up. Cut the head off as close to the skull as possible while leaving the cape attached. Throw it in a trash bag ant put in the chest freezer until I save up enough $ for the taxidermist. Process the meat as usual.
