I hunt east Texas. Land of the hogs and home of the hobo, gay, lez, and rejected deer. Ready for a change. Is south Texas really that much better? Is it worth the drive and $2000? Instead of the short drive to Kountze and $750?

You can spend $2000 on some bad hunting in South Texas pretty easily.

Depends on what part of south Texas the Hill Country area towards Rock Springs has a ton of deer but usually they tend not to get very big there are a lot of basket horn smaller bucks at least where I used to go although I have heard of some monsters coming from that area now and then they have a ton of deer and proably too many, it is sure fun hunting though if you feed you will se deer and proably a whole bunch of them and exotics are common in the wild especially Axis, Auodad, & Sitka.

If you can get on a good place it is worth it! I just got on a place south of San antonio after years of hunting east and west Texas. The property we are hunting is strictly managed and produces monsters year after year. I filmed my buddy shoot a 205" 19 point three weeks ago(low fence).Pretty intense hunt for a guy that has been watching pine trees and west Texas eight points for the last several years. It may take some work to find a place like the ones you see on TV for only $2k. I am certainly sold on south Texas!

Rock springs is as hill country as you can get

South Texas is a pretty big region, some areas are dynamite some are terrible

The good leases that I've seen start at $5k/gun and go up from there

Look guys, i just want legal deer. The closest thing i have seen to a deer in 10 hours TODAY is the decoy. I am about to be driven crazy. What is your idea of a bad liese? If it involves any amount of deer that are somewhat close to being legal, or even a spike i will take it. Right now, i would have to count my lucky stars to see a fawn. If i did, it would be dead. That is how desperateI am. Get the picture?

When I hear south Texas big deer, I think south of San Antonio, Carrizo Springs real Deep South. When I hear west Texas, I think Childress and west. A lot of people say south or west, too me they should be saying central Texas. There is a big difference in deer all across Texas. Even in those specific areas, hill country being central, and south central being San Angelo, Colorado City. (Just my opinion) I hunted south central growing up, then hunted east piney woods as a young adult, now out west. To me it is worth the extra I pay to hunt there. We consistently kill better deer, where we are now.

From what you describe you want, yes you can still find a lease for 1800 or so. Is it worth it, only you can decide that. Will you have an opportunity to shoot a deer every year, most likely.

Classic "south Texas" for whitetail is Webb county and environs. Has always been very, very expensive. Always dreamed about it. Now I can almost afford it. Now I think the potential danger just isn't worth it. Ya can't leave a cotton pickin' thing down there. And it ain't just folks "looking for a better life" no mo'. Some of those mojados are pure dee evil. I'm sure the guys that hunt there know better than me and I'm probably runnin' skeered, but I'll take my chances with west Texas.

Are you seeing sign of deer at your place? IME decoys spook more deer than they fool.

If you just want a deer.....any legal deer, I wouldn't spend the time or money in south tx. Too many deer closer to you and cheaper.

if you want to see a lot of legal deer, check the hill country. mason, brady, junction... those areas have high deer numbers.

good hunting in south texas costs a lot of money. you would be shocked what some people pay to hunt on a good ranch down here.
