I have a 12 volt battery for a trail camera that is hooked up to a solar charger. The battery seems to last about 6 weeks before it is dead. Solar panel is pointed south and get sunlight most of the day....do the cameras pull that much juice from the battery?

Depends on the camera. My Primos 35's will generally run for several months taking upwards of 1000 pics/wk. on a set of D cells.

Mine have lasted for years with that setup. You may have a bad battery. Is the camera infrared or flash at night? The flash cams do suck up the batteries.

Also make sure the the battery is fully charged before using it.

What is the amp-hour size of your 12v? Is it a 7 amp?

you may want to check your solar panel. I have had two that actually sucked the juice from my battery Put a meter on it and make sure it's putting out juice without being hooked up.

solar chargers usually don't like 12vlt unless its a big one

1. Solar configuration should last years on same batteries. If not it is connection or bad battery.

2. Very important to buy a high class SD card, like 10. Quicker the storage of picture on the card, less the battery usage.

3. If not using solar, don't go cheap, use expensive Alkaline batteries for longest life.

It is a 12 volt 7 amp... I will check with a meter and see if it is putting out juice. What should it read 5to 8 volts? Thanks

A 12V solar charger will put out as much as 18V in full sunlight. As stated a solar panel will pull from the battery when it is dark if it doesn't have a blocking diode in it. Most of them but not all will have some rudimentary charge controller. The ones that don't are generally very low output, usually in the mA range. Some systems also have as little as a 4.5V output but the circuit box increases the voltage for the system it is designed for i.e. 12, 24V etc.
As has also been stated you need to ensure you have a good battery and that it starts in a fully charged state. A rested 12V fully charged battery will read 12.6V -13V depending on the battery condition and temperature. Colder temps will give you lower readings. If you check voltage right after you take it off a charger you will get an artificially high reading. Let is sit for several hours and then take a voltage reading. 6V batteries will read 1/2 of the listed values of 12V batteries but the rest of the conditions are the same.

I use class 4 sd cards and use the Moultrie 12 volt battery/solar panel with zero problems. I also have a dozen or more Wildgame EBX battery packs (has 2 6volt batteries) with solar panel hooked up to it. Both have lasted 3 years with zero problems and still charged taking pics. I get about 4 years from my rechargeable 6 volt batteries. I will say that they must be placed in an area that gets sun most of the day. I tried this in an area that gets sun about 1/2 the day and the batteries went dead.
