Just got my hands on a remington 700 police. Im wanting to have it cut down to 24" and threaded. Would i be looking at a huge loss in velocity/accuracy. My thinking is the 24" barrel would be easier to get around for hunting. Any recommendations for optics <700, preferably ffp, and base?

Two inches of barrel would cost you anywhere from 50 to about 80 fps, not that big a deal. Accuracy looses or gains are a little more unpredictable, but with a good recrown you should be fine accuracy-wise.

Yup.

Accuracy can be retuned with hand loads. A shorter barrel is a stiffer barrel which often widens the node of "the" powder charge.

Base? EGW 20 MOA aluminum.

FFP for less that $700? Nothing comes to mind in that price range, but I'll look.

The rule of thumb is 15- 20 fps per inch, maybe 25 fps. 2" would be about 40-50 fps. I run a 29" on my 300 WM b/c I want the speed. It kind of takes away from the magnum part with a shorter barrel. I'd just thread the 26", and bed the action. If you hang a can on the end of the barrel with an unbedded action/stock, it will not shoot very well.

Put a hundred with it and you could get this one if you prefer. I know the glass is great. I have an SS but it has HD glass, which is great! I can't speak with personal experience about the non-HD glass of the SS line.

Not quite under 700 but a great value nonetheless

For a bit more I would get the pst ffp 4-16

With a 300 I think a 10x could be limiting

JG,

I know Vortex has good mechanics but their glass sucks...I just had my Viper out Sunday evening shooting at dusk and the Vipers glass was comparable BSA. It's not anywhere close to the glass Zeiss conquest or SWFA SS has in them!

Noticed that when I looked through dad's viper compared to my hd5

Wuuuut?

I can put my Viper side by side with my SS and can't tell a difference. But! I fully admit that I turn down from 24X to 20X to improve clarity sometimes.

The 2 main negatives of some of the low to medium end Vortex scopes is the very grainy glass and the large reticles on the FFP scopes. Otherwise, and good scope.

This,

Perhaps the one I have is bad but I turned mine up and down and looked thru it and compared to my March and my Zeiss Conquest the glass sucked! When I wanted to video my shooting, hitting metal, out to 1000 yds I first tried using the Vortex because it had 24x but it was so grainy it just didn't work...I attached it to my Conquest and at 20x it was really good...not great....but really good.

As far as hitting metal out to 1000 during the day you can see thru it fine but I'm just trying to hit the center of metal.

how wide is the band of the tipical "node" I've wondered at what point do you stop tweaking... 62.112518545151584 grains? or will 62 work lol (MADE UP NUMBERS DO NOT COMMENT ON THE MADEUPEDNESS OF THE NUMBERS THE QUESITON IS ON THEORY LOL)

I've seen the node be within .5 gr up or down. Meaning if it shoots at 42.5 gr it still shoots at 42.0 up to 43.0

I've also had some rifles where if you went up .2-.3 or down .2-.3 everythong went to chit. And that shows up, in my opinion, on longer barrels. Larger sine wave = smaller node. But longer barrels make more velocity. I run my comp rifle 6.5 Creedmoor at 24", my Prairedog rifle 22-250 at 24", and my kill anything anywhere rifle 7 Rem Mag at 26". But the next build is the range rental rifle 7mm-08. I will have it finished at 20" or 22" and it will only ever be shot suppressesed. The reason for shortening is to stiffen so it will hold together in long shotstrings with the suppressor attached. Sure I'll lose velocity but I will gain consistency, and that trumps everything.

There was a test done a while back that made the claim that you lose nothing until you go below 22 inches on a 300 win mag and 20 inches on a 308 win. It was done by LAPD, so I would take it as fairly accurate data. I have nothing to base that on other than what they had posted.

What? How do you not lose anything? So, if I go from a 29" barrel (which I have) and chop it down to a 22" barrel, I lose nothing. No velocity loss? Seriously, does that make any sense? Someone's full of crap and isn't worth the posting of this.

Pardon my faux pas, here is the article that I was thinking about. If I was toting a 300 win mag, I like 26" barrels.
