Just got my hands on a remington 700 police. Im wanting to have it cut down to 24" and threaded. Would i be looking at a huge loss in velocity/accuracy. My thinking is the 24" barrel would be easier to get around for hunting. Any recommendations for optics <700, preferably ffp, and base?

Two inches of barrel would cost you anywhere from 50 to about 80 fps, not that big a deal. Accuracy looses or gains are a little more unpredictable, but with a good recrown you should be fine accuracy-wise.

Yup.

Accuracy can be retuned with hand loads. A shorter barrel is a stiffer barrel which often widens the node of "the" powder charge.

Base? EGW 20 MOA aluminum.

FFP for less that $700? Nothing comes to mind in that price range, but I'll look.

The rule of thumb is 15- 20 fps per inch, maybe 25 fps. 2" would be about 40-50 fps. I run a 29" on my 300 WM b/c I want the speed. It kind of takes away from the magnum part with a shorter barrel. I'd just thread the 26", and bed the action. If you hang a can on the end of the barrel with an unbedded action/stock, it will not shoot very well.

Put a hundred with it and you could get this one if you prefer. I know the glass is great. I have an SS but it has HD glass, which is great! I can't speak with personal experience about the non-HD glass of the SS line.

Not quite under 700 but a great value nonetheless

For a bit more I would get the pst ffp 4-16

With a 300 I think a 10x could be limiting

JG,

I know Vortex has good mechanics but their glass sucks...I just had my Viper out Sunday evening shooting at dusk and the Vipers glass was comparable BSA. It's not anywhere close to the glass Zeiss conquest or SWFA SS has in them!

Wuuuut?

I can put my Viper side by side with my SS and can't tell a difference. But! I fully admit that I turn down from 24X to 20X to improve clarity sometimes.

The 2 main negatives of some of the low to medium end Vortex scopes is the very grainy glass and the large reticles on the FFP scopes. Otherwise, and good scope.
