I really cannot recall any time in my hunting lifetime that the opening of a deer season was so utterly disappointing!

Got the the lease, which is just south of Comanche, around noon with some great expectations. Trail cam pictures the week before showed a few shooter bucks in the herd, lots of turkeys, and of course some big mamma hogs. I hurry out and pulled the SD card from my Covert, got back to camp, and with a big chicken sandwich in one hand, looked over what was on camera the past few days.

Then suddenly, I realized that there was something that didn't look right along our fence line. So I journeyed back out and checked out the fence line, when low and behold, on the southside of our fence, was a new string of 8ft high post!

Yep, the rancher on our south has sold his ranch is going to high fence his 400 acres! It was inevitable, as 4 other ranches to our north have been bought up and the high fencing was started back in June. Our place has been for sale for at least 9 years; but the owner doesn't like high fencers! But, he may soon change his mind.

So, the weekend already had a black cloud hanging over it before we started. Saturday morning was very quiet, no shots around the countryside, I see 4 yearling does, and a few turkeys moving thru the brush. Saturday evening was no better, and Sunday morning was just as bad!

All in all....this was by far the worst opening weekend that I can remember!

It was quiet at our lease Sat. morning, saw 4 does and 2 bucks..a 4 and a 6 pointer. Sunday saw 1 doe and today zero. We still have acorns on the ground and lots of vegetation. Nothing at feeders with corn on the ground. Maybe next week....
