I watched a young spike that couldn't have been more an a year an a half old, chasing a doe this weekend. He had young spikes that couldn't have been more than three or four inches. The doe had her six month fawn tagging along behind.
I heard or read somewhere that the reason why few doe are missed during the initial rut, is because everyone gets a piece of the action.

A 1 1/2 year old buck will breed every opportunity they get
That's the equivelant to a 14-15 year old kid
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

That's the equivelant to a 14-15 year old kid yep, goats are even worse, I you keep them billy kids in the pin very long after weaning they will be AFTER THEM GIRLS...

I heard or read somewhere that the reason why few doe are missed during the initial rut, is because everyone gets a piece of the action. Just because they are chasing doesn't mean they are breeding! If it did I sure would have put fewer miles on my pickup during my teenage years.

You can even get a buck fawns that will breed some doe if there are no other bucks around.

Shoot him! We got a spike Saturday morning that had some of the darkest hocks I've seen on any deer, and I'm sure he was only 1 1/2.

It's a great reason to shoot him. Next year it will be hard to tell if he's a big 18month or a small 2 1/2 y/o, and he'll be more successful at breeding too .
