We took our second trophy of the season this weekend. We watched this deer three years and he is 7 years old. He has several tines 10-11 inches. His live weight was 254 and field dressed 220. The video is of this deer two seasons ago in a fight with a 190 inch deer we killed last season - this deer is on the right in the video and whips the other guy's butt. But no wonder at 254 pounds. Note sure what is going on with my videos as it is not real clear but you can get the idea - Enjoy

cheers Great buck. He must have not eaten or drank a drop when he killed him to only loss 34lbs from live to dressed weight. I have only ever seen one buck that dressed 220 and it was in a very wet year. That is super heavy for a South Texas buck. I bet he looked like a bull alive! Buck has a beautiful cape. Congrats to the hunter! up

That is interesting. What do you typically see on difference? Our typical buck is 220-225 live and dressed 180-185.

One ranch I managed had weighed bucks alive then field dressed and they came up 16% off of the live weight after several years of averaging. That was on all bucks culls to trophies. So what you are seeing is about what they saw on the bucks with the last numbers. This one was closer to 13% so I was just thinking he must have not eaten much or drank much water. I never weigh very many bucks when they are not gutted unless they are really big bodied. Largest field dressed buck I have ever weighed was in eastern La Salle and he weighed 208 dressed opening weekend in a very wet year on a protein fed ranch. IRRC he was a 5 yr old.

The heaviest buck we ever weighed was 198 lbs dressed.

Live weight would put him around 240 lbs

Most of our mature deer are 200-225 lbs pre rut

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

There's been years in both the Cazadores and Cola Blanca contests with only 3 bucks or so dressing just over 200 lbs. In my 35+ years of hunting Webb/Zapata county lines, our biggest deer generally field dressed in the 175-190 lb. range, with full weight being 210-220 lbs. or so. The only disclaimer being that protein in our area has only come on the past 10+ years or so..I could see a hoss on protein throughout his life field dressing 210lb+ but not much more. Our experience is that entrails generally weigh 40+ lbs. or so..

I guarantee you when I helped lift him into the truck bed he felt every bit of 254 - I should have taken some pics of his full body. His head looked like a cow

You can really tell when you hang one on the scale and winch him up as to how much higher you have to raise them. Any buck south of IH-10 that field dresses over 200 is a big deer for this area of the state.

I forgot to ask the hunter if he minded being shown - just out of courtesy - he would probably not care
