Looking at picking one up for hunting/plinking. I have a DPMS SASS already and it's scary accurate but heavy as a heifer. Looking for something lighter but with relatively good accuracy out to 500. Anybody have any input?

I have done a load work up on several SCAR's, and they are surprisingly accurate for a 16" 308. You don't get the speeds, but they do shoot well with good ammo.

I tried out a SCAR on my last deployment. If you can get it to go bang regularly, it was very accurate.

Fortunately, wasn't my SCAR. It belonged to one of the sailors I was working with. He said they all deployed with two each in hopes one would be working. His primary had finally been turned back in and his backup, which I was shooting, had gone back four times for repair. He didn't want it to go back for good since he preferred an unreliable 7.62 to a reliable 5.56 for what he was doing. It's too bad, they shoot great, as long as you watch the charging handle. One of the guys in my office did the initial evaluation of the SCAR for the Army and despises it.

New guy but, maybe a look at an ar-10 or a scout is in order? With the AR you know the platform.....bonus. Scout....well time proven damn near bullet proof and is always performing. Bottom line is what you want. Period. Easy answer is go with what works.

Good luck!
