To see if it has been thru the Recall cycle and repaired, look at the right side of the safety tab - right in the middle left to right and centered top to bottom, and look for a small ice pick sized punch mark. Thats the Recall ID'er from the factory.
If the gun was made in the old original Thompson Center plant in New Hampshire - look at the script on the top of the barrel - it will need to go back to the S&W plant in Springfield MA.
Look at the T/C Homepage for the details, but the Recall applies only to guns produced BEFORE ummm mid July of 2013 as I remember, and the Homepage will have those dates spelled out clearly.
IF the gun is subject to the Recall or to confirm one way or the other, call the Cust Svc 800 # and S&W/TC will send you a pick up slip and instructions for shipping back & forth, and all at no cost to you.
Right now thru sometime the last week of November, there is a $75 REBATE for purchasers of Ventures that can provide: 1. a Sales Receipt from a Retail FFL Outlet, 2. the Shipping carton's complete original Label - I used a filet knife to shave mine off the carton & 3. the completed Rebate Form from the homepage. These items will also Register the gun to the Rebate Recipient as the Original Owner and provide a Lifetime Warranty for unaltered rifles.
IMO this has got to be one of the best bargains I ever saw in all my years in the gun bidnizz. I got my 308 Weathershield Mossy Oak All Purpose camo wrapped stock gun last April, followed all the rules and got a $75 check in the mail couple weeks later....No Muss No Fuss
While I have not shot mine - too busy with my DinLaw's and my own medical issues to shoot anything this year, I talked to enough guys across the country in several websites to be comfortable with the purchase, and only wish I could find a couple more in the hard to find calibers of 6.5x55 and 280....I bid on a 280 & 7-08 WS MOak camo like my 308 but got outbid quickly, and missed the 7-08 by 5 minutes and settled for the 308. A guy on GB has some fluted barrel 6.5x284's in both blue & Weathershield, but at a Premium price or I'd already bought one.
An LGS in Sherman sold a NIB Venture Weathershield 300WMg couple weeks ago, and had a tag price at Full MSRP...so the Rebate last spring must have wiped out all the old overstock left over from before the S&W buyout in 2013.
