What are some bullets that are good for punching small central TX whitetails from 50-400 that would also double as target bullets out to 600-800?
Edit - .30 caliber.

Any cup and core will work. I use Amax's for hunting with great results.

Speer Spitzer boat-tail, take your pick I like the 150 (.308), 165 (30-06) or 180 (300 WM or WSM).

178 A-max!! Or even a Berger VLD, if you want. Yep... No doubt about it. Killed everything big enough to die with an A-max, and shot em to 1430 yards.

For those uses the A-Max is good as are Nosler Ballistic Tips. several others like SST, Game King, VLD ..... will work well

For anyone that have shot both, how does the Amax compare to the SST on paper and on game?

The Amax has pretty much been identical for me. I never shot game above varmints with the sst though. Both are a cup and core bullet so stay off of heavy bone and don't push them ultra fast and you'll be fine. I have gotten exits on pretty much everything I've shot besides a 200+ pig and it broke his off shoulder.

I'm shooting a 200gr nosler accubond out of a .300 win mag at 2960fps, nothing has walked away from it yet, big pigs and WT all DRT. I haven't shot any animals over 600yrds yet furthest was 540 (doe). I've been looking for A-Max's but haven't had much luck. I shoot bergers (140gr) out of a .264 win mag and they are deadly too. For recoil purposes my son is shooting a .260 rem with 100gr nosler ballastic tips, haven't shot any animals yet but they shoot pretty good on paper. I have some 100gr barnes TSX in .260 or 6.5mm that I have loaded for my son but worried they won't have the speed for expansion at 200 yrds which is how far most of our feeders are, there loaded down for my son.

I have good results with Accubonds in hunting rigs and Berger VLD in target rifles.

All around? For multi-purpose, SGK in whatever weight shoots best in your rifle. My 06's just love them in 180gr. Excellent on game performance, as accurate as many match bullets costing several times as much, will bang steel way out there, and won't break the bank plinking.
For multi-critter, I have yet to find a pill for mice to moose, but playing with different loads is half the fun of reloading.
