I'm a staunch supporter of gun rights and self defense, but that doesn't change the fact that there is a TON of data cherry-picking, misinformation, and deception in this post.
1. The data (
http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/statistics/...) has a lot of missing years for various countries. The figures listed in the blog simply uses the most recent year's rate for each country. Not only is this not an apples to apples comparison because the figures are different years for different countries, but only using one sample really distorts countries that have a highly fluctuating rate.
2. There are LOTS of countries that have a lower murder rate than the USA too, but those have been omitted from the presented figures. From my count, 109 countries have higher murder rates and 99 countries have lower murder rates, putting the USA square in the middle of the pack. And many countries don't just have lower murder rates, but MUCH lower murder rates...just to name a few: Denmark - 0.9; Norway - 0.6; Italy - 0.7; Spain - 0.8; Austria - 0.6; Germany - 0.8; Micronesia - 0.9; Palau - 0.0; French Polynesia - 0.4; Monaco - 0.0; United Arab Emirates - 0.8; Qatar - 0.9; Oman - 0.7; Japan - 0.4; China - 1.0; Hong Kong - 0.2; Egypt 1.2. Why has all of the data not been given? I'll tell you why: because it would soften the claimed relationship between gun control and murder. This is the definition of data cherry picking.
3. (quote): "SWITZERLAND (not shown on this list) has NO MURDER OCCURRENCE!". That is 100% pure [censored]. Since, that claim wasn't made in the original blog post, I have to ask: From where did you pull that claim, emalvini? According to the data, Switzerland's most recent year (2010) had 52 murders for a rate of 0.7 per 100,000. The average of 1995-2010, Switzerland had 72 murders per year for an average annual rate of 0.96.
3. (quote): "SWITZERLAND (not shown on this list) has NO MURDER OCCURRENCE!". That is 100% pure [censored]. Since, that claim wasn't made in the original blog post, I have to ask: From where did you pull that claim, emalvini? The average of 1995-2010, Switzerland had 72 murders per year for an average annual rate of 0.96.
4. The blog from where this post originates says the countries above the USA have "nearly 100% gun bans". What happened to the word "nearly" when it was reposted here at the DP, emalvini? As mentioned by many of you below, many countries on this list do not have a 100% gun ban.
5. What does the original claim of "nearly 100% gun ban" even mean? No definition of that is given here or in the blog.
6. Murder is complicated. Crime is complicated. There are lots of factors. I'm sorry if that pops the perfect little bubbles that many of you have created for yourselves in which there is this perfect and repeatable causality relationship between gun control and crime. Economic stability, demographics, culture, law enforcement, corruption, education levels, etc. etc. etc. ALL impact crime rates. I'm sure gun control is also a factor, but it is far from the only factor and probably not even a particularly strong factor, given that the data is basically all over the map, no pun intended.
Lastly, I just want to say that this type of deception and data manipulation and cherry-picking have no place here at the DP. I, personally, am interested in the truth. I think that applies to most of us here. That's why we come here: to have honest discussions and debates in an effort to uncover the truth. This type of deception is exactly what I'd expect from DailyKos.com or RedState.com. Let's please hold ourselves to a higher standard and reject misinformation and deception, even when (especially when?) you agree with the point being made.
After all, truth requires no deception.
