Who else here loads 7mm-08?

If you do, what weight bullet are you using and what powders do you like for it?

I've had real good luck in the past with 140 grain Sierra Game Kings and IMR 4350, but am currently doing load development for my wife's new rifle. It'll be used for general hunting duties including deer and hogs. I also have a few of the Hornady SST 139 grain bullets I haven't tried yet as well. I know there are quite a few out there liking 120 grain projectiles, I just don't have any at the moment.

Just trying to get a general consensus of what's commonly used out there.

I'm running a improved version with 162 Amax and Varget.

If you're interested in something weighing 120 grains, the Ballistic Tip has a pretty good reputation as a hunting bullet. It's much tougher than the BTs intended for varmint hunting. You could make that thing scoot.

Mine loves Sierra 100gr HP's over IMR4895, and it does respectful enough with 140gr Gamekings over 4895 as well.

I've threatened to try some Accubonds in it, but just don't see the need.

John Barsness once admitted in print that he likes to achieve 2700 fps with typical cup-and-core spire-point bullets for general hunting. He offered some rationale about the metallurgy of gilding metal jackets and lead cores and mushrooming characteristics in flesh and bone. In his final summary--almost tongue in cheek--he admitted that 2700 is a lucky number that he feels he must psychologically reach in order to have confidence in his loading.

I will admit to having a obsession for the number 3000. In my OCD world, a bullet that flies at 2950 fps is like an old man driving a Buick, whereas 3050 fps is a Corvette cruising in the fast lane. So, for general deer and hog hunting like we have in Texas, I naturally tend to gravitate to the bullets that will give me 3000 fps.

In the 7mm-08, I cannot safely reach that threshold with 139-140 gr bullets, but I can with those weighing 130 and 120 gr. The same is true with the 7x57. So, in these two cartridges, I have little use for the popular 140 gr pills, or anything heavier. So, if I'm going drive at my self-imposed speed limit of 3000 fps, I'm going to concentrate my load work-up to 120-130 grain bullets.

I currently load for 2 7mm-08 rifles. My personal favorite is a Remmy M7 that loves the 130 Speer BTSP behind Re-15 or IMR4320 for a tad over 3000 fps. It is accurate and instant death on Texas whitetails. For my brother's SIL who shoots a SS Ruger compact with a laminated stock, I load the 120 gr bullets, either the NBT or TTSX behind Re-15 for around 3050 from its short barrel.

Call it a fetish or whatever you like, but 3000 fps is where I roll.

45 gr of IMR 4350 pushing a Nosler 140 gr Ballistic Tip works for me. Also have a fair load of Varget that works with some of the lighter Barnes stuff but had too many of them penciling through. Also had a decent load with IMR 4063 and 154gr SST's but they tended to waste a lot of meat on shots inside of 100 yards.

Might look at the SGK after the season's over.

140 grain Sierra GK HPBT or Nosler BT in front of some RL-15 for 2735 FPS out of my Model 7. My wife shoots the 120 grain Sierra PH pushed by some H335. Cannot remember the velocity off of the top of my head. Both have a long history of great results.

In 7mm-08, I load 140gr VLD Berger, in a Norma case using 46.7 grains of H4350. The bullets are seated as far out as the magazine will allow but it is still a pretty good jump.

Yesterday I got down to .75" three shot groups with IMR 4350 and 140 grain SGK's seated .020" off the lands. Those groups will shrink once the barrel gets broke in.

Very happy with this rifle so far. grin

I load 120gr Nosler BT at Hornady's published max load of W760. Been doing so for 4+ years in both mine and my Dad's gun. Have never been given a reason to change. Very accurate and deadly on deer and hogs.

That'll do.

I will be loading Varget under a 168 gr. VLD once I get it back from the smith...

This rifle is my wife's. I am thinking very seriously about getting one for me and changing out the bolt stop/release to the long action one, adding the long action mag and loading the heavy's. It might be a good springtime project, we'll see. Currently working on loads for the T3 .30-06. It seems to REALLY like the 165 SGK's. Problem is, since I was working on loads for her 7mm-08 I seem to be falling in love with the T3 rifle/'08 combo.

Yeah, it's a sickness. rolleyes
