I am in the market for a 2014 GMC sierra. It will be my daily driver. I will also be using the truck during hunting season. I would like you guys advice. Should I get a 4x4 or should I get the V6 so I will be able to save on gas.

I drive a heavy 3/4 4x4 for my daily driver. It rains in my parts at least twice a year. grin I drove a six cylinder 4 speed back in the gas shortage days and gave up a lot of power for very little fuel savings. hammer

Stew I have the 2015 suburban 4x4.

It's actually impressive MPG wise...20-21 hwy 17.5 in town.

About as far as my loves goes with it. But I'm not a GM/Chevy guy in any form. But wife loves them

I picked up the 2014 GMC sierra 5.3 4x4 for myself. rather have it and not need it than the opposite. that goes for the 4.4 and the v8. heck, gas is cheap these days. if you get one and need running boards, hit me up. i have some for sale.

You should give some serious thought to thanking your lucky stars your from Texas.

If you don't tow much I would get a 4x4 v-6.

The new v-6 produces pretty good power. Getting into the neighborhood of the 5.3 before they went to direct injection. Only you really know what you need in a truck... and there is a big difference between need and want.

What in the world is he doing?

I have a 2014 GMC All-Terrain, it's the 5.3L, 4x4, Crew Cab, with a 4" lift and 34" tires on 20" wheels and I get 16.5 and I drive like a race car driver. I bet if I baby it I could get 18.

To the OP, I would get the V8, especially if you are getting extended or crew cab. Gas mileage on these new engines is much better and you'll like the extra power. Also, it will be a lot harder to sell a V6 in the future.

I think we were all under the impression you were talking about a 1500. 15 MPGs isn't bad for a 2500 gas engine.

i bought the 1500 v6 for the gas mileage. I drove from college station to bossier last weekend and got 23.8 mpg for the round trip. I do wish I had gone with the v8 though.

I have a 2014 5.3. It's a V8. Sometimes it goes to V4. There's a little indicator. I get 18 around home and 20 on the road. Drive over 70 MPH and you'll get less.

If your truck is a 2014 model with the ecotec v-6 you should have about the same power the 5.3 v-8 produced for several years before the 2014 year model.

Trucks are meant to haul stuff, pull things and go places. Get all the motor you can with the lowest gear ratio and a definite yes to the 4wd. You may only need it one in a while but that makes it worthwhile.

Buy an old beater Honda to commute.

Years ago when I bought my first truck my dad told me with trucks you pay for 4x4 whether you get it or not (I didn't need it). The logic is that you pay to get it or you take a hit for not having it when you sell. So you might as well pay to have it. Better to have and not need then not have and need.

As for the engine - somebody else said it would be harder to sell the 6 and I agree. Again, go big and enjoy having the additional power.

Get all the big bells and whistles your budget will allow.
