Wanting to get a bird dog puppy. I'm wanting to mainly hunt doves and quail. Maybe the occasional pheasant hunting trip. I have had english pointers most of my life, but I'd like to go smaller. Any suggestions? I was thinking either german shorthair or vizsla.

There is a guy in my neighborhood that raises vizsla, and I am expecting a litter of ESS around nov. 3rd. either are good quality dogs.

Brittany is a great option. they are sweet dogs with lots of bird drive plus they are small, generally 35# or so for a well bred dog. Some American Brits are bred larger but are outside the standard

My sons purchased a French Britt for me this past year as a retirement gift. Pup weighs exactly 35 lbs, he has turned out to be the perfect house dog, a real trooper out in the field, a quick learner, and extremely lovable. He has also managed to do the impossible, win over the wife! The rain has not allowed me to do a true dove hunt with him yet, but the few birds we have downed he has retrieved right back to my hand flawlessly. He is also ready for the quail season and I am really looking forward to that. Good Luck with whatever you decide to get!

We have a GSP but make sure if you decide on one you can give them lots of exercise. Ours is 10 months old and will work all day for us at the ranch. She always wants to go. She did awesome this year retrieving dove and followed a blood trail to a doe I shot. We don't have kids yet so she is our everything :-) she is very loving and affectionate and gets along great with other dogs and people but she is a lot of work and needs consistent rules. She is stubborn but once she learns she is going to get away with something she stops trying.

I used to have brittanys and my 2 males were right at 45-48# and my 2 females were around 38-40#. They are awesome. My dogs stay in the house and are pampered:), so I now own a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon because shedding is minimal to none. My female is 50#. I use her for everything including ducks.

if you aren't set on a puppy, there is a pretty dang good Viszla in the classifieds being sold by a very reputable breeder who is getting out of the business...many of us on here have one of his dogs and they are great hunters as well as house dogs.

Just letting you know.

If you want him you better hurry, I'm supposed meet DB20 in Waco tomorrow, I'm sure he'd like to save the mileage on his truck.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Barny, if you end up with the dog you will be very happy. His dogs are great, and this one sound slike he has been worked quite a bit so he will be a good one. I have two of Brians dogs and they are both prey driven and love to be outside, but also right beside us in the house. Having a started or nearly finished V from brian would be a steal at 1K. I would have picked him up but my wife put her foot down at 2.

He never responded so I'm picking him up this evening. Just wish he wasn't neutered.

That is why I didn't bite. He had this dog and a female listed for $500 on Facebook but the female had to be spayed if you bought here. I wouldn't have bought either to breed but didn't like not having the option to breed.

Court, and like all women she has a mind of her own. It only took a few times till she learned we don't jump up on anything or any body so she's really smart. We are off to the vet today for a check up and any needed shots. She's shiny as a new penny so I'm sure she's in good shape.

Are you going to have to have her spayed?

The deal is I will breed her once Brian wants a male puppy out of her. I just need to find a good male dog, then I probably will have her spayed.

That would be okay with me I guess. I never intended to breed her but wanted that option. Good luck with her. I bet she is and will be a fine dog.

I have one of court's sisters and one of court's daughters. They are great dogs. My older loves to go out to the lease and I am taking her out next weekend for some quail hunting. My younger hasn't been out to the woods yet, but she is a spitting image of my older and they are like two peas in a pod. Even my wife loves them to death.

You got a good one in court!

Hey Buckeye, are you going to breed one of your girls? If so contact DB20, he wants a male. I can't keep court in the back yard, she digs out. I need to get her spayed. There's no way I can guarantee that a wrong male won't get to her. To be honest, I wasn't looking forward to messing with puppies either.
