Had one helluva day yesterday. Started the day off hog hunting with a good buddy and Greg with Pavur Outdoors. The day really began when around 7:45am I spotted a large hog on the opposite ridge approx. 450 yds away. He was walking away and about to disappear in the brush when I decided to take a shot. My first shot hit just underneath him when all of a sudden he turned and began hauling [censored] directly at me! I quickly pulled the trigger again on my 7mm-08 R-25 but with no luck as he vanished in the valley below still heading my direction.
I texted my buddy, who was in the blind just to the East of me about 400 yards away, that a large pig was heading his way. Sure enough not 30 seconds later a shot rang out! A shot that sure sounded like a hit. I texted him and he wasn't sure he hit it as it was running directly away on a ridge between us but running directly at me again. We waited a few minutes and contacted Greg our guide.
Greg showed up (with my father-in-law in tow) and the search began. My buddy couldn't pinpoint the exact spot where he shot the hog so we began checking various trails for prints. Sure enough a few minutes later I come across a trail splattered with blood. We followed it another 75 yards when we reached the edge of the ridge and about 100 yards next to my blind.
All of a sudden the bushes erupted and our guide fired a slug from his shotgun. The pig tried escaping down the hill but was too wounded to get far. I scuttled down the hill and was able to get a clean shoulder shot from 15 yards away to put him down. Here he is as we found him.
Pure luck my first shots turned the beast right towards us then he happened right into my buddies line of sight at the right moment. Teamwork was needed on this bad boy and we were very happy with the results! 2.75" tusks and about 260lbs of pure badass!
The day was not over though. As soon as we finished with him we headed out to the lake to finish the day off doing some catfishing. Not only did we catch a good quantity of cats but I landed the gorgeous 37lb Blue as well. Definitely a first for me!
And yet my day still wasn't over. My son was hunting with my dad when I received this pic. Perfect heart/double lung shot on this older deer at 22yds with a crossbow. Couldn't help but be extremely proud of my boy and happy for him.
Don't think I'll ever have another day in the field quite like this one.
