I got drawn for doe/spike on Lake Whitney SP!!! It feels like Christmas! Anybody have any tips or recommendations for this area? The brochure says its only Muzzleloader/Shotgun but it didn't list any restrictions in the booklet. I've got a call into TPWD for verification.

TPWD just returned my call and said it is indeed muzzleloader/shotgun only. The info didn't make it on the main hunt display. Guess I'll have to find out as much as I can about muzzleloader/shotgun before registration. Anybody have any good info? I have a 12 gauge Stoeger M3000 shotgun, could I put slugs in that?

Hi Rus10, I was drawn for the same hunt dates Dec 8-10. Has anyone hunted here before? It says that baiting is allowed, is that beneficial for a 2 day hunt? If bait is used, what would be the best choice? Thanks!

It been muzzleloader only in the past, no shotguns allowed, I would call the state park and double check with the hunt coordinator. Ive done this hunt in the past and asked if we could use an alternate weapon like a bow and the answer was absolutely NOT!

I've been on that hunt twice with muzzle loader. There are a lot of deer there and it's a fun hunt. They will stick you in a blind made of hog wire wrapped with a tarp. The weather is usually the only down side since it's in Jan. First time is was below freezing and raining (bad combo for black powder) and the second time is was windy and 17 degrees.

Thanks for the information. What is the average shot distance? Are any of the blinds better than others?

LOL yes the "blinds" are sad, you can tell they are working on a shoe string budget.

You don't get to choose its a radom draw for stand #'s out of a hat.

All the blinds are set up for shooting under 100 yards

Thanks! Guess I will head to the range, haven't shot slugs in a long time. What about the baiting?

I've drawn this tag twice. It's a easy hunt. Shots are super close 25-30yds. They put out corn a few weeks before so the deer come right in. Like shooting fish in bucket but you would be suprised.... Several missed shots at 30yds with muzzleloader. I held off the first night and camped out, the next morning I got a nice spike but man his running buddy was a stud 8pt.

It's a easy hunt man no worries.

Spoke to the park this morning, and they confirmed that shotguns with slugs will be allowed this year for the first time.

I made this hunt yards ago. Very close shots. I did not care for hunting 10tds from a picnic table though.

I drew a number and a few guys went $&@£... I said what with a big grin. They said it was a good spot down by the water in semi thick trees. Good area. I was pumped.

We were loaded in a few trucks and off we went. I was the last to be dropped off in my group, it was down by the boat ramp. He walked me in and pointed out the corn pile. It was 25yds. I settled in and quickly heard a shot in the distance. I found out later another guy just walked to his blind and he had 4 doe feeding on his corn. He walked up to 30yds and shot. lol.

I saw a few doe but I was wanted to hunt the next morning too so I held off. I think 3 people missed, 1 wounded a doe but found it later.

The next morning we could pick our blinds but I went back to the same spot. right after daylight I looked behind me and there stood a 8pt with a spike in tow. I took out the spike.

Good job man! Sounds like a good time. Was this your first year to put in for the hunt?

Hey bird dog - It was my first year putting in for any of the hunts. Just moved to Texas last September, and thought this was my best chance for a hunting opportunity. I feel like I won the lottery!

Yeah I would say so. Haha. I've thought about putting in for hunts in the past just haven't pulled the trigger. Just wondering what the success was in getting drawn.

We use to use the ramp there with a guide and I know we always saw at least one buck over 150 every time we were in there. Do they not allow bucks...Bummer if they don't!

The hunt is in just over a week! Took out the 1100 and put some slugs through it to make sure I was on target, ready to go!!

I'm out here fishing and you can see the blinds. They are tiny pop-up's with pink tape all around them. Lois like a kiddie blind to be honest. They put out a little corn each day by the one near my camp. Bout a half coffee can... I would bring more corn to scatter around smile

Deer are moving late so stay in your kiddie blind all day if you can. Could be the weather tho... It's been sprinkling for two days here and cloudy.

15yd shots so you guys should be able to use a rock to kill'em
