Since this comes up on a weekly basis or so, I thought it might be nice to have a master thread of hog attractants that are claimed to work. I have gleaned suggested products and materials from the last couple of years of posts and chats with fellow hunters, but undoubtedly have missed some.
Please feel free to add on others that you have noted or your particular pet recipe.
It should be pointed out that most of the products are used in conjunction with corn (which should tell you what the real driving factor is) and for those of us who have tested various products have found no real benefit to using any of these special additives/concoctions. Claimed successes seem to be anecdotal at best and spurious at worst. Most often is the case where such products are used that the location is already used for corn feeding and hence any positive results being due to the new attractant are dubious. A lot of folks want attractants to make hogs appear very quickly when they have none in the area and there is no indication that this works at all.
However, lots of folks want to know about purported attractants. Here is what I have found so far. There are four main categories that include edible products mixed with corn, stand alone from corn, various commercial attractants/animal products, and materials not used as food attractants.
ADDITIVES TO CORN - depending on the item, it may be added dry (such as jello mix powder) or mixed with corn in a wet or soured/fermented concoction. Note that many of these cannot be used in a typical deer feeder and may need to be deposited on the ground or in a trough.
Corn (apparently the most common additive to corn - more corn) Beer Wine Fruit juices (orange, grape, etc.) Sodas (Coke, Big Red, Fanta Orange, Strawberry) Jello – various flavors, but preferences for strawberry/cherry/raspberry Kool-Aid – various favors, but preferences for strawberry/cherry/raspberry Milk and Kool-Aid Walmart powdered fruit punch Syrup Molasses Sugar “Sugary stuff” Diesel George Dickel's Sour Mash mixed with corn for instant soured smell Sow urine Yeast (ingredient used to help sour/fermentation process) Bread (ingredient used to help sour/fermentation process) Flour (ingredient used to help sour/fermentation process)
NOT MIXED WITH CORN - food products used independently Vegetables Fruits Pumpkins – gets asked about every year around Halloween that pigs are reported to devour or avoid Strawberry preserves Acorns Bait shrimp Crawfish leftovers Molasses Leftovers of all sorts including meat products Food plot Young crying piglet in a cage
COMMERCIAL ATTRACTANT/ANIMAL FOOD PRODUCTS Hog Wild Sow in Heat Grim Reaper Other animal feeds such as Sweet Feed, Horse Feed/Cubes, Dog Food etc.
NOT USED AS FOOD ATTRACTANT Telephone poles or railroad ties for hogs to rub against (creosote smell) Tree or phone pole doused with old motor oil, diesel, or Kreso-D dip Sow-urine Diesel

We have an area where we have baited with plain corn as well as every damn known concoction with corn as its base, and the hogs will not touch it. They are there, we know it, they are just selective in what they are eating. We will probably run some different baits over the coarse of the next month and see what else we can come up with.
Thanks for starting this thread. BK

Old timer at our lease saves deer blood/fluids from cleaning station bucket and dumps into corn for hogs at his other lease in Pontotoc. Swears by it, but it's hard to tell if it works any better than plain corn because the place is *infested* with pigs, they will hit everything except in the vicinity of locations where they've been shot at.

Some of those item listed sound a little like you are trying to make moonshine not a good hog attractant. So far the best stuff I have found is this stuff we carry in the store. It's called wildlife blend. It has whole corn cracked corn soybean milo oats protein pellets oats and wheat. With a bonus peanut butter attractant already mixed in the bag. This stuff works good. I have hunted the same feeder for the last five years never seen a pig. I put out this wildlife blend and seeing pigs everyday. Might be they are just in the area but sure seems to be what they came for to me.

Never had any luck with attractants. The best results I have had was mixing corn with all stock sweet feed and putting in a feeder. Hogs tore it up within 48 hours of setting up the feeder.

" this stuff we carry in the store. It's called wildlife blend. " Is this made by "Doc's Wildlife Blends" ? Thats what I found on the internet.I would be interested in trying some. What sizes are available? The closest dealer from me is about 90 miles and its a direction I never go. And also, Colt 45 has a good question..... are you broadcasting it or are you just using it poured on the ground?

There are a variety of "wildlife" blend" bags of feed you can buy, made by all sorts of companies. I suspect they are region-specific. We used some on the food plot last year and it ran about double what a bag of corn cost.

.....they are region-specific.... Here is why we are interested in this....... A) whole corn & cracked corn (these are locally available sometimes straight out of the field for us) B) soybean milo oats and wheat (not readily available in our area because its not raised here) C) With a bonus peanut butter attractant already mixed in the bag.(Not sure what to think of this... HEB Maybe????) So if we try this commercial bait and can get them to hit on it..... (and remember, I mentioned a place where the hogs haven't touched corn concoctions) Then maybe I should be searching out the other ingredients as whole products and seeing what they are really interested in. Its just easier to use or start with a combination of ingredients in a commercial product rather than to go out and buy sacks of individual ingredients to start with. That cost a WHOLE LOTS MORE than a sack or two of the commercial stuff.

I'm a plain corn guy, but you might add alfalfa to your list. I've tried a lot of the stuff mentioned and observed the same results as you DNS. Folks often mention adding beer as part of a souring process because of the yeast in it. The yeast in beer is dead. If you want yeast in the mix to help with souring, you need to purchase active yeast at the store. As previously stated, commercial attractants generally do one thing, they take money from your pocket and place it in someone elses. Good thread DNS...

Yep, plain corn does the job. But is seasonal, when most natural food is depleted. (acorns, pecans, etc.) Works best if their not trap wise. Hard to catch the older , wiser ones, but patience will sometimes prevail.

Wait, what? No. It isn't that the corn works best if the hogs are not trap wise. It is that the trap works best if the hogs are not trap wise.
When you misattribute a given result to the wrong parameter, you end up with the wrong conclusion about the parameter.
