Hello everyone, this is my first but not last post!
I am new to the hunting life and want to start by varmint hunting - the goal is to ge tto deer by the 2014 season. But don't want to get ahead of myself.
I just got a 22 LR so far I love it. Now its time to take it out. I know this time of year its hard to spot squirrel and rabbit, but I know I am not doing it correctly.
looking for some help or even a hunting buddy to go with to assist.
I went to the army core of engineers lake in Waxahachi today, but noticed it was bow and shotgun only. so I decided just to explore a little, and spotted only birds and doves.
Please help!!!!
Thanks!

Well, you started and that is the hardest part!
Get to know your gun, sight it in and practice shooting from different positions and offhand - you hardly ever see a game animal while sitting at the shooting bench! Learn to use the wind to your advantage. Keep the sun to your back if you can. Dress confortable for the weather - if you start sweating, you stink but if you are freezing, it's hard to shoot well with frozen fingers. Learn to stalk quietly, take a few steps and look around, then a few more steps, wash rinse repeat as most animals walk this way and you won't be perceived as so much of a threat. If you just stomp around, you are sounding the alarm for animals. A cough will be heard for hundreds of yards by animals. Leave the perfume and body spray on the shelf...LOL!!
There are plenty of other little things you can do to enhance your chances. If you get good at hunting on public land, hunting on private less traveled land will be a cake walk!
Just be safe and have fun doing it!

Yeah There are NO public areas to shoot rifles anymore here in Texas :-( all bows and shotguns. As far as shooting, been spending a lot of time at the range sighting in and breaking in the rifle. Also shooting without the scope and adjusting on the fly. I am also just looking for a place to hunt with a .22 rifle that is not going to cost me a ton for a day...
Just need the right connection I guess.
If anyone is planning on any small game hunting anytime soon and doe snot mind a tag along let me know please :-D

Hit up the classifieds or go get you a decently price 20 ga. You can shoot squirrels and such nicely with one of those.

If anyone is planning on any small game hunting anytime soon and doe snot mind a tag along let me know please :-D giving ya an invite for a hog hunt on public land. take it ya have all the legal things in order. Bad part, its over 100miles one way trip ta the WMA on your part, will be doing a walk-a-bout type hunt, atv trails are reported ta be flooded, witch is the norm, good thing is dont use the trails, may get wet, but not behind the ears. Hogs are getting tougher ta find, so no garrentes. poormans hunt, be for food, have ta put some effort findings hogs, work will begin whin hog is down, quartering & back packing. my health is not the best, but will try ta keep up with U. I got GPS so we can learn together an hopefully not get turned around. if some one else closer gives ya a better offer, no hard feelings, Merry Christmas

Awesome offer! But the public lands do not allow rifles correct? I only have a 270 that would work for hog. My .22 not so much unless a perfect shot behind the ear... But do not want to be around when I piss off a hog haha

But do not want to be around when I piss off a hog haha your in luck .22 is legal on this place. have went inta the thick stuff with .22 pistal tore orange plastic vest ta pieces, an lost hat it was so thick, an it will drop a hog. right now can use .22 shotgun or muzzy, had to side step a hog once down their. took son & daughter out hunting hogs their. u never seen American Hoggers or Lady Hoggers? thats more dangerous, dogs corner a hog, heck a rabbit, an thar only escape route is U that rabbit gonna try hurt ya. I learned something from U, .270 is a smarter choice than .22 after deer season some public land is open ta all legal meens. That does sound safer than .22 I try ta keep my shots limited ta 30yrds an less, it is public. whin I do hunt with someone else, I usualy go threw the thick stuff, an other person off ta side, pistal works best. have had lots of luck that way, usualy other person gets the shot. Safe hunting, hunting places are hard ta find as U are learning. Their might be some Guides willing ta take ya. Best Wishes.

thats better deal than what I had ta offer, price of gas, over 200 mile round trip, walken threw the water, I go threw alot of tennishoes & socks, ya would have gotten alot of exercise though, hog's are getting thinened out down thar, then again, meet some friends down thar from Ft. Worth, they wanted ta try an area, we walked in, less than 5min had two hogs down, little more walking got third, right place, right time. I know few areas that have seen some big hogs, got few smaller ones few years back, not as young as used ta be, bout 120-150# hogs they tore my butt up, solo hunt, later friend an I went out thar & I didnt pull trigger on one bout 2-3x as big, I regreat that, as saying in here goes, tis used ta getting laughed at. an down thar tis considered an outlaw, cops showed up few days after had been down thar, hunting hogs, said they had complaint, told him my side of story, every thing was cool, yes still hunt their. whin I can aford it, chance ta put some chops on the easy part is finding hogs, theits fewer &fewer, look over the THF every one looking for a hog hunt. work begins whin hog is down. Old Sabine Bottom WMA has a good crew out thar Best wishes on your hunt, looking forward ta hearing about it. oh, ya got that frown upside down safe hunting. key pad getting worn out, lol

Th squirrel was about a 60 yard shot.. Not too far but not too close. Was happy with the shot just behind the head. was in this spot for all of them. Apparently my scope is about 1/2 of an since off to the left at 60 yards when its sighted for 50 yards.

Thats my big green feeder at my place.its hard stalking hogs on my place.wish u would have shot one.but thank u for shooting the squirrel s.the other hunter shot a hog.maybe next time u will bingo Ok I do not want this to come off the wrong way. When we first got there we were taken to the back edge of your place. Was a nice blind and comfortable, but did not see anything all day until late in the evening when you released some more hogs. When I spoke with you, you said that the hogs are running up on the other side of the hill and that is a good spot... So why were we put on the back side? After you said that I walked up there and all the food from the feeders were gone. It got freezing around noon and I took my dad home. I came back with my wife and once again i was taken to the back side and another hunter was taken to the other side where you said the hogs were running. About 20 mins later we heard shots from the other hunter, and then he left. I was under the assumption he go this hog (which you just confirmed). At this point my wife and I decided to just call it a day and head home and walked back to the car. After I called your guy to tell him we had left he asked if we saw anything and I once again said no. I also pointed out that ALL of the feed from the morning and evening was still laying on the ground untouched. He then offered for me to drive back and go to another feeder. I felt like since I came with an out of state number and out of state plates on my car that I was treated like a customer that would not return. And that is most likely the end result. Just thought you should know the true details of my day. PS the set up was very nice, the blinds were in great positions, and the property was very nice. The Hogs I did she when I was stalking were very nice looking. (I got within a 20 yard shot but was blocked by heavy brush. I hit a stick and the big one made two grunts and the who pack took off, was almost is a position to take a shot)

& on the hunt. looks like M Bennett got a pretty nice set up WMA land can be tough hunting, one was telling ya about, reports are its flooded, it opens for all legal meens for hogs, your (.270) is legal, & as U pointed out, a better choice than .22 Happy New Year They say all legal means for hogs but then on the property itself is only allowed Bows and shotguns on most of the WMA
