I was an Alt Shooter for the Texas Oklahoma shootout. The whole team showed up so I ROed 3 stages, and had an hour of down time, so I grabbed my rifle and ran the stage a few times. Then I grabbed the Bushnell Fusion Mile binocular range finders and ranged the Kangroo. Lased it 3 times and came up with 1194 yards. I picked up my Kestrel with Applied Ballistics software installed, pointed it at the direction of the Roo, and it gave me the exact right come up, I figured it was going to be high, so I aimed at the top of the leg on the roo, and that's dead nuts where it hit. I took 3 shots at it, hitting it twice. Might have hit it a 3rd time, but I did not hear the impact so I can't say for sure. Rifle was my Short Action Customs .260 shooting 140g Berger Hyrbids at 2780fps TEXAS WON WHOOO HOOO BACK TO OKLAHOMA OKIES, THANKS FOR ALL THE MONEY. Lat 38* North. .3 Mil wasn't much wind while making that shot. I bet you were relying on the Kestrel as well as mirage. Heck, I'd rather have a solid 10 mph 3 o'clock wind than the stinkin shifting mirage.
Good shooting, Ryan.

Good shooting, Ryan. I was curious about the mirage myself. I was sighting in my .308 Saturday afternoon & the mirage became a factor. Idk how the snipers in Afghanistan deal w/it.

In Afghanistan? Hell, shoot across blackland praire in the summer time. Looks like you're looking through a pool of water, at a dancing target. To 500 or 600 is isn't too bad, outside that it can be extremely difficult. Couple of weeks ago I was using a spotting scope spotting hits for a shooter's score at a club match. At 600 yards the mirage was angling left to right. When he shot at a 786 yard target, and missed, the splash drifted right to left. It can be very frustrating when you're the one on the trigger. Use the mirage to your advantage, but sometimes it is so heavy that it's a hinderance.

I was up on that tower, and it was really not all that bad. It did get to boiling and that's when I took the shots. Wind was just dead, maybe 1-2mph but I had a slight cross so it evened out.

Also, I'm shooting East to West here. Coriolis will have an effect on your elevation, for me it was .2-.3 mils. That's 10-15 inches.

Must be awesome to hear that ding. Or see it. I guess it may be too far to hear. Oddly enough, it was real quiet when I hit it, with my electronic ears I heard a really loud "GONG" sound. It reached it at 1397fps. Still some umph left

Must be awesome to hear that ding. Or see it. I guess it may be too far to hear. When there's two of us or six of us watching a steel target a shooter is trying to hit, we can get golf like. Boom! (Silence)....................."impact".............then you hear the report. It's cooler than sliced bread.
