Good day. I was hoping if anyone has hunted the hills 5 miles south of Concan Tx. off hwy 127. If so can tell me about the deer if the hunting is good or not? Just dropped a couple feeders and was hoping hard work will pay off? Thanks.

Hunting is good for WT and Axis. That's a transition area from cedar country to south Texas brush. Lots of deer with a chance for a dandy.

The terrain is like that on the property. At the bottom a lot of cedar that starts to change over to brush up the hill.

Feeder to the southwest of your stand. The winds down there blow from southwest MOST of the time. When a norther blows in it's from the northwest, so feeder should be SW of your stand. If it's possible to get elevation to your stand, so much the better.

On 21 acres, would put only one stand in the center of the property. Prevailing winds at Concan are from the southeast.
Adios,
Gary

Gary would know. Hey Gary, you still have your place in Menard?

Thanks for the help. We have a stand about 20ft high. Just dropped it in. Hard work hoping it pays off?

I hunt on the same road, have since 1986. The hunting has always been poor at best. That whole area was broke up into 50 & 25 acre plots & in return has been hunted out for a long time now. Ever since they broke up the old Concan ranch. Out of 27 years we have killed less than 5 does & those were over 15 years ago, and we still have very few deer. Surrounding neighbors will shoot what is legal. We are on 120 ac & as much as I've tried its just not enough to manage. Water, foodplot, protein & corn. They have it all. I still let anything thats not mature walk on by, knowing it probably wont make it, but I cant help hoping that maybe that was the one pass he needed to make it to manhood! Anyway, Its kind of a sore subject for me. I love it out there.

Bwool. Thanks for the post. So the deer stay away from that area? What about up high in the hills? It seems all the deer are closer toward Concan? How far in on Mesa Verde Dr. are you?

No, its not that they stay away, there's just not near as many as there are if you drive 5 mins in any direction. That land typically holds a lot of deer, but in that little area they have been thinned out over the years. There are some, but nothing like should be there. That is a 5 deer county, which means hi density, but not in our valley! I've seen 6 hunters on 30 acres out there. If its brown its down! Its hard to do any managing with that going on. If they were given a chance they could bounce back. We need to get what few does we have on fertility meds. I'm down toward the end of the road. How for down are you?

I'm about half a mile in across from GW Ranch. I'm always in on helping the deer grow around us. The fertilizer pills you talk about where do you get them from and do you put them in a feeder? Have you ever seen any exotics in the hills? Thanks.

Oh ok, I know where you are. We have seen exotics a handful of times, but nothing that has ever hung around. I keep thinking that sooner or later we'll have plenty around. Thats another thing you cant drive 5 mins without seeing. High fences. Those fences get knocked down all the time when it flash floods in that country.

I went with my brother out there one time to look at a 20 acre lot that was for sale.....there were a lot of deer blinds on all the other 20 acre plots that were around it. And a lot of 5 gallon bucket feeders hanging from trees on the road on the way in......we concluded it was over hunted and that trespassing/poaching was probably a common occurance. The terrain was like u described...brush at the bottom with cedar as you moved uphill. Didn't see any animals other than a rabbit. Needless to say, he didn't buy the place.

Everytime I've been down there I see LOTS of Axis and WT. How close to the river are you?

Yeah that was a little ridiculous. Yes we still hunt our ranch. My neighbor has had some aoudad hanging up on his hill a couple of years ago & saw an axis doe about a year ago. I talked to a land owner many years ago that was up closer to the highway by you & he use to see a lot more exotics. My guess was they were closer to the river than us.

Bwool. I'm not a big hunter, but I would like to try and get an axis. Do you think there's a chance where I'm at? I really got the land for my family get area. Thanks. Maybe I will run into you some day out there?

Oh yeah, theres a chance. They are all over that area. You never know when one will wonder by. I am sure we'll run into each other sooner or later. That is neat country, I'm sure you & your family will enjoy it. If you see a black Chevy 4X4 Duramax driving by flag me down.
