I was fortunate enough to move from California to Dallas a couple of years ago. Since then, target shooting has become my major hobby and I try to buy a gun or two every year.

So far this is what I have:

-22lr bolt action: Very accurate.
-308 Savage 10 FP in a B&C tactical medalist: Very accurate as well for long range shooting.
-Glock 35: It’s the long slide practical tactical model in 40 S&W.

I don’t carry (for now at least) and I don’t hunt. But I might be interested to start some sort of competition shooting (like USPSA match for example).

So this is my question:
Since I have limited time and fund what should I do next:
-Should I invest the time and money in obtaining my CHL as well as get in USPSA matches? To me this is what makes more sense.
-Should I buy another gun and for what purpose? For some reason I have my eyes set on the Colt 6721. This is what my heart tells me.
-Should I invest in a match barrel for my 308? But my current setup is already shooting 0.5MOA. So I’m not sure it would be a good move.

So what would you do?

^^This. I beleive everyone who carriers or plans to carry should get proficient with their firearms. I got into competition shooting for this reason. I started out with IDPA, and moving into tactical style match shooting. I also have a G35, and it will do any handgun competition shooting you need. It is a very accurate and reliable pistol. The only think I did was upgrade the trigger and put on a set of Dawson precision target sights.

I definitely think option 3 is the most obvious to rule out.

What about getting either a good over/under or semi for clays/sporting shooting?
In terms of shooting for fun, I think shotgun shooting is the most entertaining. It is filthy expensive, but then again what type of shooting isn't these days.

Option 4... I like it.

Actually, a few years ago I was told the same thing. At that time, a friend told me to get into clay shooting instead of target shooting as it would be much more fun .
I guess I could start by just going to a gun range (like Elm Fork) and rent a shotgun to shoot clays.
I don’t want to miss every time. So what should I do? Take a few classes, or just do some online reading to understand the technics?

I guess I see things a little differently.
While I agree that everyone who carries should get proficient with their firearms, I sort of dissociate CHL and competition shooting.
I think I’m more proficient with a hand gun than most of folks who have their CHL and carry (it’s obvious when I go to a shooting range). Don’t get me wrong. I’m very far to even come close to guys who are competing in USPSA at a certain level (from what I’ve seen on YouTube).
While competing will help to be more proficient with your carry gun, my main goal for competing would be just the fun of the competition itself.

Yes. The USPSA is a different type of shooting than IDPA. IDPA is geared for drawing from concealment and engaging targets from behind cover under a time clock and under stress. You have multiple targets and reloads in a stage with lots of movement. IMO, it's the best type of handgun competition for practical carry. This is why I chose IDPA.

Also, shooting from a relaxed firing point at a shooting range is 100% different than an IPDA and USPSA match. My first match was a big eye opener! You will quickly learn what you need to work on and what gear does and doesn't work.

If it's purely for fun, I definitely think shotgun.

I preface the following with I condemn drinking and shooting in the same way I condemn drinking and driving. I consider myself and most of my friends reasonable grown ups who can have a few beers without being drunk or stupid.

Give me an open field, shotguns, a couple tossers, a couple boxes of clays, a cooler of Miller Lite, and my brothers/best friends and that is some of the best times I've had in my life.
I just think you can have more fun with a shotgun than anything else. Sporting clays, skeet, tossing with frinds, playing chips, trying trick shots, etc.......

I know. .. Walmart sells the 6290 for $1040 and I would really like to get one (I actually prefer the more accurate 6721). I will eventually get it in a year or two. But for now I think I’m going to with USPSA/CHL/Clay (in no specific order, or all at the same time)

Of course once you have completed that, you will have made your decision. Either way, go try out some shooting clays

Sums it up. But not so sure on the Colt, depends on what your paying for it.

You may want to buy a smaller carry pistol too.

Of course, everyone should own a scattergun anyway. 870 or 500 would be my choices.

Get your CHL, this is very inexpensive and your duty as a Texas transplant.

How good is the scope on your .308?

You could get one that will allow you to get into long range. Obviously your rifle is shooting as a .308, but if you wanted to get a better long range performer you could rebarrel it for 6.5 Creedmore or .260 Rem.

I think I’ll go with the CHL. I did some reading and you can actually get the Florida CHL for very cheap. It seems there is no specific benefit in getting the Tx CHL vs the Florida CHL.

My scope is a SS 10X42 and I can shoot under 1MOA at 500 yards.

I would get a Texas CHL. The only reason people are able to get out of state CHL's and use them here are reciprocal agreements between Texas and the other states. The bad thing about these types of agreements is the states can back out of them on a whim, and you may not even know it. You live in Texas, get a Texas CHL.
