Anyone ever heard, see, or know about any places with Bushbuck to hunt, or for sale for that matter in Texas?
I'm shocked that they aren't here, I thought they could do quite well in South Texas...

I have thought the same and even thought about importing them, you can buy in South Africa pretty commonly.
I've never seen them available. As I understand, they don't do exceptionally well in zoos, nor are they in high demand for zoos to keep, so there aren't the 'leftovers' that get sold to the private trade.

Bushbuck can be extremely aggressive. They are, by far, the most dangerous antelope species to hunt. In SA, they call them dog-killers, because so many tracking dogs are killed. The trackers will not pursue a wounded bushbuck because of the high risk of being attacked and gored. They send in the dogs. More dogs in SA are killed by bushbuck than leopards, so they tell me. I was also told that they have been known to gore/kill other species much larger than them. I know they were the most challenging species I hunted while I was there. Shy, elusive, long shots - but when wounded or frightened they become aggressive and dangerous. Thank god I didn't wound one - but I did miss. My PH made it very clear - make it an immediate kill shot, or don't take it. So I was aiming for spine/neck at long distance. IMHO, I don't think any rancher would want to put them on their ranch, knowing the risk to people and other exotics or whitetail. But that's just a guess. They are also very solitary animals (at least the rams) that require a large area. The females don't congregate much either - and both are very territorial. You would have a pretty large area just to have 2-3 rams, and then they would probably fight with whitetail in their area.

Interesting. I looked and 777 doesn't carry them. Looked for them a bit in Zimbabwe and couldn't find a nice one to take. They are really cool!

This is for sure one of the best hunts I did in South Africa. The spot we hunted was unbelievable. It was located down on the river where leopards were known to be. The bushbuck were all free range. The first evening I hunted them we came to the alfalfa field and there were a ton of them! Picked out a good one and shot. The landowners son was convinced that I missed. I was convinced that I hit. Well they searched the next day and didnt find anything so we went again. I got a shot at one when we were about to call it an evening! Here he is, a VERY old one. I love his character. And believe it or not a day later they found my first one, bonus Bushbuck! If anyone is interested in one of the best hunts South Africa has to offer, let me know. There is only a few PH's that can hunt this land and one of them is our concession in South Africa!

My first trip was to Zimbabwe and I picked up a grand Bushbuck but alas 3 days later we were sitting a water hole and saw a HUGH one on the other side. The PH said it would be in the top 10 as it was 21" plus I saw it and it was atleast 50% bigger than my 14 1/2incher. He never saw it again.

A 21" Bushbuck would have been something to behold!!....must have looked like a small Nyala.
