We got hooked on making crackers for party's & get togethers last year at Christmas, we started out buying the seasoning online but it was almost 7 bucks for a package of this stuff after shipping & it is only for four sleeves of crackers. So I decided to come up with my own. Every where I take these, they get devoured, we make up a batch about every two weeks & keep em in a plastic container on the counter to munch on through the week. These are great in the boat or deer stand too.

Things you need:
Measuring Cup
2 1/2 Gallon Ziploc bags
Large Mixing bowl
4 Sleeves of crackers (Any Brand will do but I like the Nabisco Premium saltines)

Seasoning Ingredients:
1 1/2 Cups Canola Oil
3 Tbsp Ranch Dressing mix (I buy the big shaker at wal mart)
1 Tsp Garlic Powder
1 Tsp Onion Powder
1 Tsp Crushed Red Pepper (like at Pizza restaraunts)
1 Tsp Black Pepper
Just a pinch of Ground Red Pepper (I have a little measuring spoon that says "pinch" but somewhere close to 1/4 Tsp is good)
Intructions:
Open up Ziploc bag & place in large mixing bowl to help hold it up, add all ingredients (no crackers yet) & mix up real good in Bag.

Place the bag back in the bowl & cut the Crackers open so they will be easy to dump in the bag quickly.

Dump all four sleeves of Crackers in & zip up the bag trying to catch as much air in it as possible. I like to take them straight to the kitchen table at this point & lay them down & just start gently flipping & shaking the bag side to side.

Let them sit for 5-10 minutes & shake / flip bag again, I do this several times (until I don't see liquid on the bottom when I flip them), I usually let them stay in the bag overnight but you need to at least leave them for 4 hrs or so.

Enjoy

Those things are addictive. My wife makes them. Her recipe is about the same except without the garlic and onion.

She made some this week to send with my son and friends on a trip to TN.

She also puts pretzels and Cheese Nips in there as well.

Edit: The best bite out the whole recipe is the last. She makes them in the Tupperware and stores them in zip lock bags as well. Here is what you do. Have your favorite cold beverage on standby. Cut the bottom corner from the bag with all the ground up crackers and hot salty seasonings all concentrated in the corner. Cut that corner off with scissors and pour it down the hatch.

Folks with wimpy taste buds and subject to a stroke might not want to do this. grin

look great.. i gotta try it.

One question... is it 1.5 cups of canola oil or just 1/2 a cup?

I don't know about the original poster, but my wife said that one cup will do it. I know that when she adds pretzels and Cheese Nips that she goes up on all of the ingredients.

She has been making these for years and all along I thought she baked them a little bit like the Chex Mix thing at Christmas. But she said she doesn't. There is some Oyster Cracker recipe that she does that she bakes.

I think I would try baking this cracker recipe a little bit. It could only make them a little bit more crisp after oiling them down.

Either way, these crackers are great!

I use 1.5, I think it gets the seasonings spread around better.

Glad to hear it, I tried several different recipes, all had something I wanted to change, so I kinda just took bits & pieces of each & came up with my own. Glad you liked it.

I haven't tried this exact recipe, (Something Similiar) but I bet w/ the ranch dressing in the mixture, should be AWESOME!!!

Also Heard that these are called "FIRE CRACKER'S".......

The fire crackers recipe online is where I got started, they were a little too spicy IMO & didn't have enough Ranch flavor, basically, all I did was add some Ranch & added Black Pepper in lieu of some of the Crushed red pepper & I cut the Ground Red Pepper down some too. I think I added some garlic too.

Thanks for the post. My first batch is outstanding. The hardest part is to stop eating them.

I have a batch going with oyster crackers right now.

Those look pretty darn good. Has anybody tried baking them after adding the marinade? Just wondering if it would get them really crispy with the oil on them.

My experiment with the oyster crackers worked - sort of. I used 2-9 oz packages (the saltines are 16oz).They don't absorb as much oil as the saltines. Maybe I'll use the mini-saltines next time.

I did bake the oyster crackers and let some paper towels absorb any excess oil. They are crunchier, but not near as good as the recipe originally posted. I think that is because the crackers are denser & soaked up less of the goodies.

We use Hidden Valley spicy ranch miX and add a little dried powdered habanero to dust them with.. Definitely bake at 400 for 5 minutes. Great with a cold beer !
