Is Duval county shot out???
I have 500 acres that i share with no one

I believe Freer has gotten an unusual amount of rain fall so far this year.... They should have plenty to eat elsewhere. As far as being shot out... I'm not sure, but I've heard it can be hit or miss in that area. Especially around San Diego.

I dont know much about the hunting off 339, but I have driven through there a couple times. How many deer blinds can you see from yours? I have seen 4, 5, and 6 blinds all within a couple hundred yards of each other off 339. There is probably ALOT of hunting pressure. Best bet is to keep pressure and activity down on your place and feed as much as you can.

There are some places in Duvall Co. that are heavily poached, road hunted and subsistence hunted year round. Everything I've heard is that it's better west of 16.

Hopefully they're just not coming to corn because they've got plenty of groceries growing in the pasture.

Go knock down some piggies before the season arrives.

Your problem is your locations. One of the most poached and most sub-divided areas in South Texas. You can't see what is not there.

Hogs could be eating all your corn and keeping the deer away from your feeders. Sounds like you might need some good feeder pens. Also, as mentioned above, if you've had a lot of rain, the browse could be in good shape and the deer are passing on the corn for now. Maybe set up some game cams along some trails and see what happens. Hopefully you don't have bad neighbors.

well hopefully its that they have plenty to eat with all the recent rains. its about 6 miles off any paved road so i wouldnt think poaching would be a problem but you never know

Dude, it's Duval Co. Road hunting and poaching is a birthright there.

How many locks are on your gates for the landmen to check the oil pumps?

Lots of predators!..
Several bad summers in the past few years with low fawn survival.

Its the perfect storM!

This is hard to read since our family ranch is located in Duval Co. I've been hunting there all my life. Never had a lease anywhere nor did I need one. Also never had any personal problems poaching but I can't help what I can't see.

My dad and I are the only ones that hunt the ranch and, from experience, know that we don't have consistent big deer there, although we have caught a few game cam pictures of some way above average deer, for us anyways, but nothing consistent. I've always assumed that it was the leasers around our property that shot up everything. We'd always see new blinds and feeders on the properties next to us year after year.

We bought the property next to us and try to do what we can to help the growth and well being of the deer pop. there, but we can only do so much, plus we can't go around buying all the land around us you know... wink

To the original poster:

All the comments about over hunting (insane number of blinds) road hunting / poaching ARE ALL TRUE. I work in the northern part of Hebbronville (on the Jim Hogg Duval county line) and primarily work in both of those counties. . . its one of those things that is going to be the death of this place.

Everyone thinks they are the next Aldo Leopald and they know everything about wildlife ecology and how to manage land. So they lease their property out to unsuspecting people looking for a quality lease. . . then the person getting the lease sees next to nothing for their money.

One of my best friends has a lease that he had for 3 years because "the bucks are just shy" and all this other crap they told him. He barely even shot hogs. . . the land owners family would sneak out there and shoot everything.

Unless your purchasing day hunts from a high fence ranch, you will more than likely get robbed here. I havent met two people in Jimm Hogg or Duval that give a rats hairy [censored] about the ecosystem here. They throw car batteries in their burn piles, litter everywhere and over hunt the land to the point a "big" doe is a 1.5 year old. . .

I hope you are experiencing some sort of luck and your deer are just "being shy". Keep us posted with info, I work with the game warden from time to time helping with poachers, maybe I can help you out in someway.

So. Texas deer don't always come to feeders this time of yr...You
should see more as the winter starts..Freer, Encinal, Miranda City, ect..try Christmas Week..when they are usually rutting and
see what you have..DD

First thing that comes to mind after reading your essay is "PEN" build one is what you need to do if you want to see an increase in numbers..deer don't want to compete with the hogs for food so they will go else where thy don't have to..

I am in agreement!! Build a GOOD pen! I heard all the bad comments on Duval County prior to leasing... and I am sure some places are shot out or poached... we are Southeast of Freer in Duval County on 1200 acres which half is low fence... and we must be an exception as we have a TON of DEER... already seen several nice bucks on game cams (more bucks than doe on cams which is odd). However, we had some crappy feeder pens and as soon as the hogs started coming in... very few deer would come to those specific feeders (all the rain and natural vegetation has probably helped limit feeder activity as well). I just think the deer won't show when there are 8 pigs under the feeder. Kill the pigs and build a pen... good luck... there are some great genetics and nutrition down there.. stay optimistic and you never know what could come out of the south texas brush smile

I agree, I would fence the feeder.

The hog fence worked for me. I'm down in the southeast end of Duval. Although lately, I haven't seen nothing much at all. I think a lot of does have fawns right now and can only assume they are coddling them somewhere in the brush til they get older.

We hunt south of Freer - and we are seeing fewer animals at our feeders due to all of the rain and growth we've had this year. The deer are still there - we've seen them move through on game camera's. Not throwing corn just yet but feeding protein right now.

Duval County, who leased you the property, the owner or an agent/outfitter? I can tell you real quick how your season is gonna go, you sure the hogs aren't javelina?
