I hunted a couple of seasons with DJ Farms, did not do very well. Nice folks and plenty of land but not many birds. It has been a few years so it might be worth checking out again. I go west for dove.

Pretty spot on with my opinion as well. Vernon, the guy that ran the operation, is on here and is a great guy, and very hospitable. When I hunted with them there were 9K acres to hunt. I didnt scout out the area much due to not enough time. It seemed to me that certain areas were hunted extremely hard. With that much land there has to be a few honey holes. I believe it is priced appropriately, and if I lived closer I would definitely do it again just for the access to that much land to hunt. IMO, too many hunters hunting the same few places, and not enough birds. Maybe some of that has changed.

Thanks guys, let me know if I can help show someone around or tell you more.

Last year was down, two years ago was very good early, then again late, but slow in the middle, year before was awful everywhere, right now we're seeing birds already, hope the heat and storms stay away for about 6 more weeks!

I had hunted on them the past five years, but won't be able to this year. The Normans and Vernon are great people.

Some of the fields are huge, and there a lot of fields. Most of the time you will have the fields to yourself. I rarely ran into other hunters (didn't hunt opening day or weekend out there) so you might need some help pushing the birds around a bit.

I think it is a good value for the amount of land that goes with the lease.

Vernon knows. He lives out there. I have been on it for about 6 years. Hunted the Leonard side mainly. There have been some good ones. Any time you have as many grain fields as they do there will be good ones and bad. Scouting is key. Expect some crowds opening weekend in the fields where the birds are. 2 years ago the opener would have been great for me but I was one field away from the action. My son and I normally hunt together but I oonly bought one pass this year. After a staph infection in the foot and a skin graft I am not sure how much I will be hunting. I did have an incident last year where a guy tried to set up 10 yards behind me. I finally got him to move after quite and argument. Most people out there are pretty courteous.

North Texas hunting- scout- about feed and water. Opening weekend can be very good. Typically hit or miss. Trade off for distance.

Hunted DJ farms for 2yrs 13 years ago. Nice people and a great place to have land to run a 4wheeler around and teach your kids about hunting and close to dallas. That being said I'm older now and can afford to go west where the dove action really happens. If your looking for limits it just won't happen. But DJ Farms is a great place to have access to a lot of acres for family or kids.

I was on DJ Farms for 4 years (2014 was my last year). The first couple of the weeks can be pretty good. As everyone has said, with all the acres they have, scouting is critical. I never had any stellar hunts on the lease, but there were some days that were pretty good. First two years, I hunted the Leonard side...the last two years, the Howe side.

Scouting trip almost ended bad today. There is one heck of a mud hole on 3805 between the cemetary and 3850. It is now deeper. Without locking diff and Atrac, 4 wheel LS, I would not have made it out. If you see the holes on left and right and the crown is slick back up and do not try it. I made the mistake of trying to back out half way through it. Would have been fine if I had just put in 4lo with diff lock on and crawled through.

Should have taken some pics of the road but all I was thinking about was getting out.

Lots of places to get stuck out there. Getting stuck while scouting is like the opening event of dove season festivities.

Tearing up roads that don't belong to you. That's awesome.

Those are black dirt county roads in that area. You can't hurt the roads. County graders will smooth them out in dry weather.
#1 rule for black gumbo roads - if wet, don't drive on it. Blackland is so sticky it'll suck your truck up to the axles, including 4x4s. Everybody that tries to get you out will get stuck. Local tow truck drivers won't go there either...getting muddy on an atv is about the only way to get around.

yes they do in a way. They are public county roads and I pay taxes just not in Fannin county to often. Are you the same jerk that scolded me for driving through a dry fallow field to avoid a hour long traffic jam? Trust me I did not go out there to play in the mud.

I am on DJ this year. Opening day in Leonard and been hunting Howe this week. Found a decent spot and hunted with a couple other guys yesterday evening. We were all on birds. I shot 9 but lost two in the tall grass. I need a dove/duck dog!!!

No, I'm not a good shot, but I shoot often.
